Thanks to thirdeye11 for sharing this bottle. Drank alongside the bourbon-barrel version.

The beer pours a clear amber color with a white head. The aroma is full of spicy rye and caraway notes, as well as some biscuit malt and some toffee. The alcohol is well hidden in the aroma.

The flavor is full of rye, along with some sweet brown sugar notes. I also get some toffee malt as well as some alcohol. Easy to drink.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. (462 characters)

22oz bomber with beige wax poured into a sampler.

Pours a hazy golden color with no head but a ton of lacing. Nose is sweet and bitter with a lot of earthy rye.

Taste is sharp and earthy, bitter, and a lot of rye which I love. Mouthfeel is full and creamy, nice sharp finish. Very good. (288 characters)

Poured into a Lost Abbey tumbler. Reddish brown with burnt orange at the edges and an off white head good retention. Lots of rye in the smell, some sweet barley, caramel, toffee, strange smell of rice, some spicy hops. Taste is very sweet caramel, some spicy rye, raisins, figs, and dark fruit. Caraway pops out at the end and lends an interesting flavor. Mouthfeel has a heavy body and very light carbonation, finishes with a bit of alcohol. Not an amazing beer, but solid. (474 characters)

2010 vintage. Poured from a waxed and capped bomber into a Cigar City snifter.

Thin light caramel head with poor retention. Beer is a cloudy caramel color. Lacing is spotty and spare with little stick. Thick legs. Average given the style.

Caramel, brown sugar, golden raisins and toffee. Some astringent hoppiness hiding in the background. Moderately aromatic and sweet. Nice subtlety.

Opens caramel and brown sugar. Some toffee with raisin stem bitterness towards the middle. More brown sugar and caramel sweetness in the middle with a boozy end. Finishes brown sugar graininess with a bit of a boozy aftertaste. Solid.

Medium bodied with low carbonation. Smooth and super silky in the mouth and goes down with a bit of booziness. Finish is accented with a warm, softer, lingering aftertaste. Superb.

A really solid surprise here. Could use a little more sweetness in the taste but the feel is amazing and even with a little over a year on it, this still has tons of aging potential. Can't wait to try the BA version. (1,027 characters)

Ben(madorb) popped open a bottle at the release today. It was poured into taster glasses and shared with Wil(wilwfu) and Susie(brewsie).

Pours a very viscous and syrupy maple colored liquid with a thin light khaki collar.

The nose is made up of sweet, doughy malts, spicy rye, black licorice, caramel, vanilla. It reminds me of a nicely aged barleywine, but without the oxidization.

The taste follows the nose closely. Sweet caramel, rye, slight hop bite, black candies, vanilla, It's straight forward and solid. It really tastes like a nicely aged barleywine. It finishes sticky and dry, but goes down smoothly. The ABV is impossible to detect.

The mouthfeel is full with a low level of carbonation, but still isn't as syrupy as I thought it would be judging from the pour.

Hi-Fi is a really interesting take on the style. Despite the ABV it wouldn't be hard to enjoy a whole bottle by yourself, but it's always better to share. Rye is hard to brew with and this beer was made with almost 60% malted rye. Good job Bryan! I can't wait for the bourbon barreled version. I think this one could be a real sleeper. (1,116 characters)

22oz wax topped bottle into a few glasses. Ruby with light mocha head. Rich retention and spotty lacing. Aroma is caraway, molasses, cocoa, caramel, and some green citrus. Taste is identical with added roast and spicy alcohol. Fairly sweet overall. Full bodied with some sharpness and plenty of alcohol warmth. Complex but the ABV interferes occasionally. Bottle: Poured a deep hazy brown color ale with a small foamy head with light retention and no lacing. Aroma of spicy rye notes with some caramelized notes and some residual sugar notes. Taste is also dominated by some spicy rye notes with some heavy caramelized malt with light toffee notes and quite a bit of residual sugars. Body is quite full with medium to low carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed with lots of extreme flavours and just enough balance for the residual sugars not too take over the whole mix. I still think that additional attenuation would be beneficial for this beer and most other Flossmoor beers. (638 characters)

Reviewing the Hi-Fi Rye (Batch 1) from Flossmoor Station Restaurant & Brewery out of Flossmoor, Illinois. This is the base beer of the Batch 1 Barrel Aged Hi-Fi Rye.

Score: 60

Batch 1 bottle served in a plastic taster cup and enjoyed on 07/28/12. Review is from iPhone notes I jotted down at my birthday bottle share.

Appearance: Pours a much more “cloudy” caramel color than either of the barrel-aged vintages. A lot more ruby transparencies are apparent. Pours a thin bubble tan layer than settles to a ring around the glass. Below average lacing, average retention. 3.5/5

Smell: Fruity sweet caramel malt and not much else. Faint brown sugar notes. It’s shocking how one-dimensional this beer is considering how complex the barrel-aged version of this vintage was. 3/5

Taste: Sweet and malty caramel water with some faint fruitiness. That’s it. No rye flavor, no dark fruit, no hoppiness. This beer has totally fallen off. Not undrinkable, but so is 312 – why bother? 2/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, low carbonation. Sweet and malty. 2.5/5

Overall: I cannot attest for the beer fresh, but the original non-barrel aged vintage has completely fallen off. I recommend skipping this one.

amber color with a thick head of white that while staying low to the surface, certainly had some nice staying power.

Feel is like syrup, just thick, and really filling. Loads of hops jumping right out at me, even with a little age on it. Fresh pine, hints of candied sugar, an almost medicinal like quality at times peaks its head up. Still though all very, very nice. Rich flavor here, candied sugar, notes of hops and rich grassy, herbal qualities. For as strong as this one was it really kept the ABV very, very nicely hidden. Sipping an hour later I was amazed at just how well rounded this one really was.

Overall just a super solid and very well put together Bwine. (673 characters)

2011 Bottle, released late February courtesy of acurtis.

Pours a syrupy thick looking honey amber color with a small light khaki/cream colored head that dissipates leaving minimal spotty lacing.

Aromas begin with a spicy rye atop some bready biscuit malt, hints of with some light pine needle and floral hoppiness and hints of other spicing (apparently caraway seeds according to the bottle, wouldn't have known otherwise). As it warms you get more of the caramel/toffee sweetness in the background.

The tastes begin with a mild bitterness with plenty of toffee, toasted bread and brown sugar. In the finish of the beer your get plenty of spicy rye notes with some caraway providing a really distinctive flavor to this beer. The hop flavor is there, but not the main attraction; only helps the rye malt to balance out the sweet/caramel malty backbone.

The mouthfeel is interesting, starts out quite heavy and thick and you think it's going to be too sweet but the rye and caraway seeds quickly dry out the finish leaving a nice balance between dry rye and sweet malt.

Overall at first I wasn't impressed with the look, aroma or taste, but after a few sips I understand and really enjoy the flavor profile of this beer. Not sure how this had changed over the last year as this is the first time I have sampled it, but I think it is perfect right now after a year and I wouldn't wait any longer to consume. Really big, bold, lightly sweet, caramel malty beginning with a nice balanced dryness from the caraway seeds, lighter hop flavors and the prevalent but never dominant rye. No alcohol flavor what so ever; the only way you know it's a big beer is the semi-viscous look during the pour and the slightly heavy mouthfeel. Pretty sure it's coming out again this year so definitely seek in out in a couple weeks, highly recommended. (1,835 characters)
