Irresponsible tick #12

A) Medium-light tobacco brown with a layer of haziness. Not much head and not a speck of lace.

S) The aroma goes something like this: sweet bourbon, charred oak, vanilla, dark fruit, peat and doughy grains.

T) The barrels are strong on the palate, too. However, it is more charred oak with whiskey picking up from there. Well done barreling if a little overbearing. Toasted bread and earthy hops.

M) Medium-full feel with moderate carbonation. The bourbon makes for a biting feel which carries the finish.

On-tap at the brewpub.

A: Clear medium amber body with a thin cap of fine tan head that quickly settles into a ring. Light lace. Solid.

S: Caramel, vanilla, charred oak, and bourbon. A bit of fruitiness, too. Nice.

T: Grassy and floral up front, with vanilla oak, caramel, and bourbon as it progresses. Purely boozy finish mars things a bit, though.

M: Creamy, froth medium body. Very lively indeed.

O: Enjoyable, but way too boozy for 7.5%. Probably my least favorite of the three BA offerings during my visit, but still a decent beer.

Bottle: Poured a hazy dirty amber color ale with a large foamy head with excellent retention and some good lacing. Aroma of dry scotch notes with some distinctive peat notes with very little residual sugar notes. Taste is quiet dryer then I had expected with some peat notes with light smoke and some scotch notes with light barley notes. Body is lighter then expected with super great carbonation and light warming alcohol notes. Quite different then what I was expecting with loads of attenuation and almost no residual sugar. I could see myself drinking this on a semi-periodic basis.

A: Pours a burnt orange body with light haze. Small, beige head. No lace.

S: Caramel, toffee, and a figgy / plum presence. Lots of booze and heat.

T: Really boozy... 7.5%? Really? Burnt sugars, toasted oak, dark fruits.

M: Medium-bodied (I was hoping for more heft). Carbonation is moderate. Again, boozy.

O: I was really excited and hopeful that this would be the new BA Hi-Fi Rye equivalent (i.e. a good, barrel-aged, malty beer). But it was kind of meh.

Bottle (2012)

Hazy burnt orange and light brown in color with a small khaki colored head which leaves irregular splotches and dots of lace down the glass.

Scotch and a peaty aroma greet me first, along with burnt sugars and mild smoke and wood.

The flavor is very scotch-forward along with a big peaty character and mild smoke. Unbalanced, incredibly boozy, and not particularly enjoyable.

Medium bodied with low-moderate carbonation.

I didn't care for this one. One dimensional, and a bad dimension.

Picked this up at Flossmoor on DLD after they closed the Pub. $15, and was told it was 1/900... I wish I would have picked up an Imperial Schwartz, too.

A - Burnt orange with some floaters. It had a small, cream-colored head, minimal lacing, and a lot of funk left in the bottle.

S - Big scotch aroma up front, sweet burnt sugar/plum... smells really boozy for the ABV.

T - Very boozy for a 7.5%... I would think it was a misprint. Big, smoky wood, caramel, and slight plum.

M - Thinner than what I'd prefer... I'd Coats well with the right amount of carbonation IMO. Finishes smooth and slightly creamy, surprisingly.

O - $15 feels really high now, but I'm glad I was able to try it. I had really high expectations, and I'm left slightly disappointed... Wonder how long it was barrel-aged for. Looking back, I wish I would have cellared this guy for longer.
