Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: extremely dark brown which allows a minimal transit of light through the body. Head is a thick finger of pillowy tan foam with decent retention.

Smell: rich chocolatey aroma with a light undertone of vegetal hops. Simple, but well-executed.

Taste: much less chocolate in the flavor than in the aroma; the flavor has a lightly bitter, somewhat acidic character with a roasty grain component. Not quite coffeelike, but definitely "black" in taste. I actually rather like it; it is dry and quaffable.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a fizzy effervescence that works hard to be creamy but doesn't quite make it. Not bad, but not wonderful.

Overall: I like the dryness and drinkability of this porter. I feel like this would make a great session drink down the pub.

A. - Dark brown color with an explosive head. Head lasts a long time with quality lacing on glass in patches. Inviting.

s - Coffee and malt.

t - bitter malt in front with a coffee finish. A bit bitter, but a good to very good porter.

m - thin, but nice wit the high carbonation.

O - would like more body and less bitter for this beer to go into the outstanding range, but it is knocking on the door.

I don't like Geary's very much, but this porter is definitely the best thing out of their winter variety pack. I feel like I needed to rate this beer because i am not much of a porter fan in general (tending to stick to IPAs and Stouts) but this one was nicely smooth and tasted more like vanilla than a typical porter (closer to a Stout it seemed but more bitter). However, rather than a typical porter, which tends to have the bitter and almost dry taste for a darker beer, this one had a very tasty, sweet and almost refreshing taste and mouthfeel

Jet black with a mocha colored head with not much retention. No visible carbonation. No lacing

Smells strongly of cocoa/bittersweet chocolate. Coffee. Smoky roasted malts

Taste is a little thin. Lots of smoke and roasted barley. Black coffee. Very subtle chocolate. Hint of tobacco. Some buttery diacetyl common for Geary's

Feels watery thin. Slight bite of carbonation. Medium bodied (light for a porter) and smooth

Overall not bad but nothing to write home about. Nice if you want a dark beer that won't fill you up to quickly. Goes nicely with barbecued steak
