Did somebody say London Porter? I enjoy Fuller's London Porter, so if Geary's can hit that mark, we have a sleeper. This was part of a beer of the month package which my friend gave to me. Thanks Simon! On to the beer:

A short head forms on the pour, which quickly dissipates into a bubbly lace around the glass. However, the beer is as black as ink, so there's at least something positive to look at. The aroma is captivating. It offers a modest roasted coffee note, fudge, and nuttiness which plays well in the scheme of things.

Although this is merely 4.2% ABV, Geary's London Porter does bring a spark. The roast from the aroma comes to the palate, and there's an unsweetened chocolate note which gives me the thought of brownie batter. I'm also getting a faint grape-like flavor, which comes and goes. There's roasted astringent malt towards the end, giving the beer a bitterness which keeps the beer from being too sweet. It's light bodied with modest carbonation, and at this strength is easy drinking.

Geary's London Porter is a more than fair attempt at the style. While not quite a true session beer, I appreciate whatever "low" ABV beer I can get that also delivers flavor.

12 oz bottle; no date.

A: Poured a 2 finger head not much lacing; flattened out quickly; dark coffee color.

S: Not much aroma with weak coffee tones.

T: Disappointing. I was expecting more, some what metallic taste that lingers.

M: Lighter body and too much carbonation. Again disappointing.

Overall: Just an OK Porter.

Jet black pour presenting a slight khaki head that dissipated quickly. Smells moderately of chocolate malt. This one tastes strongly of bittersweet chocolate and burnt malt with a bitterness that holds through the finish. High carbonation gives this beer a more refreshing mouth feel than you might expect. Medium bodied.

Enjoyable, but more bitterness than I'd care for personally.

Appearance: With a thin light beige head is a dark brown to black beer.

Aroma: Chocolate malts, dark roasted coffee, faint caramel notes, dark roasted hops.

Taste: Very crisp mouthfeel to start. Dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, hops are roasted very much on the dark side.

Notes: A good one to pick up during the colder months or a cool night. A very well brewed porter top to bottom. Cheers.
