Brewed for the 25th anniversary.
"brewed by Sean P. Cooledge, a brewer at Geary's for over 17 years. This oatmeal stout includes oatmeal in the grist, resulting in a pleasant, full flavor and a smooth profile that is rich without being grainy. The color is dark brown and the roasted malt character is caramel and chocolate-like -- smooth and not bitter. Coffee, chocolate and nut aromas are prominent. 5.1% ABV."
Gearys oatmeal stout forms thick dark tan head is black very black
The aroma is wonderful creamy chocolate with a roasted coffee that blend very well
The taste is nice smooth but has the many stages of an oatmeal stout start silk smooth. Malt and chocolate. The taste turns to a coffee and roasted barley finish very nice

Pours a dark brown/black color, decent sized light tan head, sticks around for a good while, not much lacing though.
Smell has a simple but effective aroma of deeply roasted malt, even a coffee-like presence.
Taste has a surprisingly thin body with active bubbly carbonation, seems more porter like, lacking the typical smooth creaminess that accompanies most Oatmeal Stouts, roasted malt up front with a burnt coffee bitterness in the aftertaste, a bit sharper than expected.

Pours dark brown and sits opaque black. Bubbly dark beige head is quick to fizzle out into a half moon collar.
Smells like char and buttered pretzels. I got a whiff of floral hops from the first bottle but none of the bottles since.
Butter and char. Has the trademark silky oatmaeal mouthfeel but it also has the trademark Geary's slick butterball tongue coat which doesn't work here. Odd tart raspberry flavor in back.
A disappointment from Geary's.

On-tap 3/20/2011 at Battleship Brewhouse in Fall River, MA, served in a US tumbler pint glass.
A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, short off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains creamy roasted malts, oats, milk chocolate, some coffee and some dark fruit.
T: The taste likewise starts out creamy with a hearty roasted malt character and oats followed by flavors of milk chocolate and coffee. There are touches of dark fruit and hops in the background creating a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.
M: Smooth and crisp, medium-to-heavy body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
D: Tasty, goes down easily, slightly filling, decent kick, good representation of style, it's a nice beer worth drinking for a while if you're in the mood for the style.

Light fizzy darker colored head touch of lacing, pitch black beer.
Nose plenty of creamy oats, bit of dark chocolate, some darker malts with a hint of carafa, sweet malts, chewy like.
Taste starts with toasty bready malts, plenty of oats but light feeling, slightly chewy and creamy but light feeling, some dark chocolate, light molasses and hint caramel, bready yeast flavors. Then herbal hops, light bitterness with the herbal earthy hops and some briny salty bitterness from the dark malts, and a hint of roast. Finish is slightly dry with lots of lingering bitter dark charred malts, light oats and chocolate, and a bit of bready yeast.
Mouth is med to lighter bodied but feels thin, good carb.
Overall not bad for gearys, but fairly thin and light feeling, decent malts that get over bitter and briny, but ok.

Small but resilient head. Lots of blanket lace on the glass. The liquid is dark, dark brown where no light shall pass.
Deep burnt bitterness from an ample dose of black patent malt. I may even detect some hop, but it's hard to tell. No chalkiness.
Quite dry (almost lip puckering) initial taste. Watery like most dry stouts, but a little thin for an oatmeal version. High carbonation. Short aftertaste but there's an essence of stone fruit that I like.

Into a pint glass:
A: dark mahogany colored body with a lumpy creamy light tan three finger head. The head lasted about a good two minutes. There was quite a bit of foamy lacing as the beer went down.
S: malty with some notes of chocolate and coffee
T: same as the smell, but the chocolate seems more subdued
M: medium with a moderate carbonation felt on the tongue, slightly sessionable, wet aftertaste, no finish
O: this is a good oatmeal stout. It left me wanting more of these, but not right away

Reviewed from my notes. Served in a pint glass at the Great Lost Bear.
A: Dark brown liquid with a creamy brown foam head. Good lacing is left behind.
S: Roasty malts and a touch of chocolate. It smells robust, warm and inviting.
T: The beer has a medium dark malt flavor. It isn't too sweet. There are some hops in the finish. There is none of that oft-maligned Ringwood yeast flavor. This is an impressive beer.
M: Medium body and carbonation. It is a little sticky. Some sharpness on my tongue as I swallow.
D: I find this beer to be very enjoyable.At 5.1%, I could drink a few of these. The high quality of this beer reminds me of the great Geary's Anniversary beers of 2006.

On tap at with dinner. Coulda had Allagash White, but thought I'd give this a try, though I haven't been all that impressed by Geary's.
Poured dark brown, almost black in dim light, and showed good clarity and reddish tint when backlit. There was no head by the time it got to me, little visible activity and absolutely no lacing.
Light roast and not much else, other than some kind of rotten funk, briefly, but repeatedly, that made me think dirty lines. But who knows.
The taste, fortunately, was the best part, even if average at best. Mediocre is probably more accurate than average. Mild roast, a hint of malty sweetness, and some ever so minimal bitterness in the end. I don't taste the weird rotten funk I smelled, thankfully.
Mellow carbonation, closer to thin than medium body, and is smooth with an overall pleasant texture. Clean and slightly roasty finish.
As stated above, this is a mediocre beer in my view. Not bad, but certainly not one to seek out. If it's a token craft at the restaurant, it might be a good choice. And my gut is that the weird smell was the fault of the establishment serving it, not the brewer. But that is just my suspicion.

A Little less than 1 finger light brown head that has some moderate retention. Body is black with no light seen through and good signs of carbonation
S Big time sweet malts round out the nose. Light milk chocolate with a roast following.
T Much like the nose. Roast comes through in the middle that cuts the sweetness. There's a fruit type taste that seems a little out of character.
M Smooth feel with little carbonation and a tad light on the tongue
O Decent beer but nothing mind blowing. The muted fruity taste really hurt it and some sweetness would really help this one out.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
A: Very dark brown, just a shade away from black. Two fingers of tan head settle to a quarter of an inch, but hold fast there. Thin, wispy rind of lacing.
S: Caramel, blackstrap molasses, semi sweet dark chocolate, oat starch, roasted malts. Buttery. Quince-like fruitiness far in the background.
T: Cola and a touch of molasses at the outset. Deep roastiness takes over from there. Woody, char and soot. Burnt coffee. Caramel. Oaty starch. Buttery/butterscotch from the ringwood yeast. Fruitiness is a bit more forward than the nose let on. Lingering finish of cola, molasses, and a kiss of smoke.
M: On the lighter side of medium bodied. Full and creamy, though it feels a little too foamy. Relatively high carbonation. A little more weight and a little less carbonation would go a long way.
O: It isn't bad, but it leaves you wanting for something more. A little disjointed in flavor as it's a little weak up front, but then the roasted malts really jolt the palate toward the middle before tapering off into a decent finish. Body/mouthfeel leaves something to be desired too. It needs a few tweaks, I think.

A: Pours a very dark mahogany color with a perfect 2 fingers worth of tan head
S: Malty with some roasty coffee and dark chocolate, fairly mild overall
T: Follows the nose. Roasted malts dominate with notes of black coffee and bitter dark chocolate. Bitterness lingers throughout and follows into the finish
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Could be fuller, but I feel like this is more of a sessionable stout with low(ish) abv so I won't complain
O: This is one fine beer. Plus, at 7.99 a sixer it's a good deal too. Goes great with the Winter-Spring months and is nice and easy to drink
