English India Pale Ale (IPA) |  6.00% ABV

Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: bishopdc0 on 03-12-2011

This ale has its origins in the traditional English style, with a generous helping of American exuberance. Bright copper in color, it has an assertive hop bitterness balanced with a subtle malt foundation. Dry hopping at two sates of the brewing process provides floral and fruity hop flavors adding to the complexity of the brew. Original gravity ~ 1060; Alcohol by volume -- 6%.

12 oz bottle. Twist off.

It pours a clear copperish amber with a soapy, foamy slightly off white head that leaves speckled lacing.

The smell is initially dank hops but is overtaken by an overload of butter. I mean the yeast just shit out diacetyl into this one.

The flavor is lightly fruity, not as bad with the diacetyl that was in the aroma. It is still there though with some butterscotch and light hop notes. It has a pleasant bitterness.

A trainwreck of a beer.

Appearance: Clear, darker gold color with one finger of head that fades quickly with little lacing.

Aroma: a lot of caramel malt, especially for an IPA. Just a hint of of resinous hops and a bit boozy/ medicinal.

Taste: A nice, medium bodied malt base with a lot of caramel malt sweetness, followed by some non- descript bitterness towards the back end. Finish is pretty clean with some phenolic notes.

The Rest: Not the best IPA I've had, but if you had told me this was an APA, I would have said it was pretty good. It's lacking in the hops department, but is quite drinkable

Picked this up spontaneously due to a pretty good price at my local bottle shop. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised.

P - Copper/dark brown with a reddish/orange tint. Poured from a bottle into a snifter. A creamy off white one finger head which fell off pretty quickly.

A - Some citrus notes, a little earthy & not very hoppy for an IPA.

T - Not as much citrus in the taste. More molasses & a sweet syrupy taste than a citrus. Some orange notes but no grapefruit or hops at all.

M - light to medium in body. Nothing too amazing but this beer finishes very dry & it isn't bitter at all.

O - For the price I paid ($2.99) this isn't bad. I wouldn't ever pay more than $8.99 for a 6 pack.

True to form, Gear'y English IPA is exactly what it says it is. The beer pours a nice clear copper with virtually no head or lacing. The smell is malt and bittering hops. The taste is bitter with notes of sour. The mouthfeel is medium to light in body and even carbonation. Overall it is drinkable, but there are just some many other beers out there.
