Dark brown yet very transluscent. The head quickly subsided. When first poured it had a slight fruitiness, banana. Once the head subsided it has the malt, sweet, raisin aroma. The flavor is malt and alcohol. It is sweet on the tongue and then fades into caramel and alcohol in the finish. The body is big and round. The drinkability would be higher is there was not so much alcohol in the finish.

Poured into a 1/2 liter stein a rich mahogany color with a rather thin off white head,the clarity and richness was nice,it overshadowed the lack of a head.Lighter aromas of caramel malt,plum-like fruitiness,and light iron,not a real assertive nose.One of the sweeter German made doppelbocks its heavy on the caramel and plum/prune sweetness,in saying that its warming and is what its supposed to be.Lighter in feel but it goes down easily without much alcohol presence.This would be good on a cold winters day wich we dont get here in NC very much.

Appearance – This one foamed up like crazy. The head was kind of loose but went down slowly and laced the glass. The body was brown and seemed kind of thin though.

Smell – There’s the classic doppelbock aromas. The toasted malt and toffee/caramel came out nicely. Did I finally find a good ale from Der Hirschbrau?

Taste – Not quite. The taste was a real disappointment. The toasted malt was there, but the sugars wimped out and the offering took on a wimpy, water, flavor.

Mouthfeel – This was horrible. It was flat and unappealing.

Drinkability – If you know and love doppelbock, this is not for you.

This beer was an unexpected surprise. Good looking deep-copper colour.

Thin head that rapidly cleared to the thinnest peripheral head of bubbles.

Fat molasses flavour rolling over the tongue. Smokey rich molasses, which at times can threaten to become a bit too too rich to my dry-favouring palette.

Would enjoy this again, but it's a bit too full-on for me to make this a session beer. People who favour the richer/stronger end of the spectrum might find it very interesting though.

Deep red-copper, maybe a mahogany. I'd love to have hardwood floors this color. Aroma is like a decoction malt heaven - sweet malt-o-plenty. Head disperses quickly, leaving little lace.

Deep sip - ahh! A sweetish decocted malt attack consisting of dark caramel-dipped fruit (figs? dates?), with some maple and pumpernickel flavors. Distant underlying noble hoppiness to balance. Almost criminally drinkable for the strength as the body is deceptively light for a doppelbock. Aftertaste is like a caramel apple sandwich on pumpernickel. Which, oddly enough, is a signature I look to - and love to - find in a good doppel.

A very nice effort - not nearly as chewy as an Andechs or a Paulaner, but eminently more drinkable for it. A couple of liters of this would leave me a happy boy.

16.9 oz brown flip-top bottle with no freshness date from HDT Importers Inc.

Appearance: Deep reddish brown hue with a glowing clarity. Thin on the head … minimal stickage on the glass.

Smell: Earthy malt with sweet melanoidin aromas. Hint of spice in the alcohol and faint herbal hop as well.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Very creamy with a battle between the crispness and a slickness in the full malty body. Fresh brown bread, pumpernickel crust and almost caramel malt flavor. Suggestions of black tea and chicory in the back. Touch of alcohol warms the mouth. Hops smooth things out with just enough to balance, finishes with a toasted malt sweetness that is not cloying at all.

Drinkability & Notes: Quite complex with a delicious readiness to it. I don’t know whether to sip this or quaff it … then the malt and alcohol reminds me it is a bigger brew. Went very well with the buffalo burger with mild cheddar on a bulky roll.

16.9 oz swingtop bottle, served into an imperial pint glass. Pours a clear, mahogany body with a small, beige head that is quickly falling, then suddenly disappearing as I accidently tilt the top inch of the contents onto my coffee table. Oops! No lacing, from either bottle.

Aroma has a powerful maltiness, appropriate for style. Molasses, caramel, and brown sugar combine with a dark fruitiness of figs and dates, with a hint of spicy anise, to produce a powerful bouquet. Very nice!

Mouthfeel is very light bodied for style, with low to medium carbonation.

Taste is complex with lots of malt character. Molasses and maple syrup front a strong component of dark fruity figs, dates, and raisins. Definitely, a hint of spice is lurking here..seems to be anise. Hops are understated, and lend a balancing bitterness, floral in a retro-olfactory sense. Alcohol is cleverly concealed all the way through. Finish has some chocolate malt character, and the aftertaste features a dark fruit tartness.

The lighter body makes this very drinkable for a doppelbock. Certainly, not as heavy or filling as its more celebrat(or)ed, cousins. Definitely,worth a try!

Had this doppelbock about this time last year. A good brew to (hopefully) close off the winter...

Pours a rich, dark ruby - lovely when held to the light. Despite an aggressive pour, only about a half inch of head that quickly dissolved into a ring. A few flecks of lacing.

The nose is nutty and malts, with a touch of dark fruit and spice. Pumpernickel bread, caramel, and booze round things off.

Sweet caramel and chestnuts up front, then a fruity, spicy finish. A bit of warming alcohol creeps in here, but the taste of it isn't unpleasant. Rich, yet easy to drink. Definitely a sipper - hearty and delicious.

Thick carbonation, with a medium-thick body. Slighty creamy, chewy.

A great doppelbock, definitely one to keep in mind for cold winter/spring evenings. Might have to pick up a bottle or two for the cellar.

Another sticky sweet doppelbock. Soy, caramel, toffee, with some roastyness/burntness and some chocolate, not much in the finish, minimal bitterness. Too upfront and sweet. Sometimes this style really impresses me (Andechser, Celebrator), and other times its one of my least favourite dark beer styles, but some nice flavours.

A- This beer has a dense but clear brown body with a fizzy beige head and a racing carbonation.
S- The aroma is strong of black olives but as it warms it takes on more of a rich Munich malt aroma with some darker malts underneath.
T- The woody brown malt flavor has a freshly crushed Munich malt taste followed by some darker toasted malts and a dry roasted malt finish that lingers a bit. The melenoidins in the background grow as the beer warms and some pot caramel comes through as a nice sweetness.
M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a soft cleaning fizz and no alcohol heat.
D- This beer has some nice malt flavors like chewing on fresh grain but without the hulls getting stuck in your teeth. The nougat melenoidins were a nice support and weren't to strong making this beer full but very drinkable.

Deep red-brown capped by a huge beige heage. Poor head retention and no lace. Fiery garnet highlights when held to the light. Crystal clarity. Rich, malty aroma smells of raisins, nuts, and dark bread. Richly flavoured without being overly sweet, fruit & nut flavours rest on a foundation of toasted bread. There's a hint of brown sugar and barely noticeable alcohol. There's a subtle earthiness to the finish. Medium bodied with low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel.

I like it a lot more than I remember liking it last year. I've gone through a few of these half-litre bottles since it started showing up on LCBO shelves this spring, and will probably go through a few more before its gone.

Pours a dark reddish-amber. Foamy head reduces to a very thin skin quickly, and all but disappeared soon after. Very slow carbonation. No lace.

Smells of sweet, robust malts, and ripened dark fruits such as plums and prunes.

Delicious. Very malty flavor with an essence of brandy. Alcohol is felt but warming, not cloying. Chocolate and caramel flavors zing through upon further sipping. Not too sweet.

Feels velvety smooth in the mouth with a mild fizziness. Reminds me of barleywine in this aspect.

A very easy sipper, delicious by itself or as an after-dinner dessert.

A very decent beer, and one of the superior choices of the LCBO, our local government largest buyer of alcohol in the world. Pours darkish, carbonation is high and mouthfeel not as smooth as could be,and on the sweetish side, but decent drinker.Average for its style.

Pours a dark copper, a thick tan head recedes quickly. Some spotty lacings, but nothing noteworthy.

Cinnamon laced fruit with some candied nuts in the aroma.

True to smell, loads of typical malt flavours. Rye bread, light caramel notes, jammy dark fruit, faint spice. Very tasty.

The mouthfeel is great, incredibly smooth and creamy for a lager. Moreover, this is dangerously drinkable, the strength is incredibly well-hidden.

A - Really nice artwork on the swing-top bottle....very pastoral and serene. Very German. This one is deep wood-stain brown with dark purple hues showing up when it's held to the light. It looks almost red at times. The tan head stars out at about two fingers and recedes to a firm cap....eventually the head disappears altogether. Nice frothy lacing is left on the glass.

S - Chocolate marshmallows...like Count Chocula. Nice understated chocolate scents with hints of vanilla also, and there is a faint smokey sausage aroma also....like smelling the campfire from a distance.

T - Milky chocolate icing flavors manage to be sweet and cake-batter like without being cloying. German chocolate cake, Little Debbie rolls, and all things baked and chocolate in nature. The faintest twinge of hop goodness wraps up the chocolate flavors and sort of cleans the palate. There are slightly woody and sausagey flavors too....slighty feral and wild.

M - Very low level of carbonation. Creamy and slick. The finish is like taking your last bite of German chocolate cake....then the alcohol warms you from the inside. My only complaint is that it's a bit thin.

D - Just about perfect. It's complex, interesting, sweet and scrumptious, but also understated and mild in a way. This is less balls out malty than some other doppelbocks, and IMO that adds to it's drinkability.

A clear mahogany body is capped by a short head of dense tan foam which fades away shortly but maintains a creamy collar and initially leaves some minor spotty lace. Although the nose is somewhat restrained and lacks the rich Munich malts found in many examples (ie. Optimator); it is fairly complex with a gentle touch of fruit (apple, soft prune, mild background cherry), deeply caramelized sugars, and a waft of mineral character. In the mouth it's very fine carbonation gently tingles the tongue; thinning and smoothing out the medium/just-bordering-on-full body. The flavor delivers some light fruit upfront; followed by a rich, deeply toasted and caramelized molasses-like maltiness as it warms across the palate. The bitterness is quite evident beneath the malt at this point - suggesting that it will finish bone dry - yet it oddly fades away as the sweet but deeply toasted malt steps forward to linger on the palate. It's crisp and refreshing then as the malt erodes and some dark fruit steps back in; leaving an impressive and complex finish! A very unique Doppelbock that holds enough malt to satisfy, and is exceptionally well-balanced. The alcohol is very well-hidden; and except for the fact that it does eventually hit you, this is a really drinkable doppelbock. Most impressive!
