This is traditional style of altbeir from Düsseldorf, Germany. Alt literally means old in German. Staying as true to the recipe as possible, the Headwall Alt is brewed using German malts, plus German and American hops. Like the Pale Ale, the Headwall Alt is cold conditioned, dry-hopped and krausened in the bottle or keg. Similar to the Pale Ale, the process takes about 30 days.

Served: On tap from the New England Brewfest.

A: Dark brown with a tan head. Decent amount of carbonation and bubbles.

S: toasty malts and nuts.

T: Full taste of nuts and caramel followed by a decently equalized hint of hops.

M: Medium body that covers the entire palette of sweet caramel and nuts and the bitterness of hops.

D: Quite drinkable. Although not my favorite of browns, I would definitely buy myself another round of this.

Appearance: Pours tea colored with a one finger off-white head that fades slowly and leaves spots of lace on the glass.

Smell: Caramelized malts with touches of spice and nuts

Taste: Malt forward with flavors of caramel, nuts and spice; the finish is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Doesn't quite capture the better aspects of the style

Not having had any of the world-class examples yet of this style, I really enjoy this one from tuckerman's. I don't know if that's indicative only of this particular Brew or the style itself, but hoping to try more alts for sure.

Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. The beer is from a recent trip to NH. In the glass a clear yet dark mahogany to ruby color shows up when I raise my glass to a light source.
A large airy and fluffy eggshell white head of 4 cm foams up and fades slowly leaving dense lattice on the sides of my glass. The lattice remains after each sip as well and the foam proves to fades slowly throughout the sampling.
The aroma is some caramel and biscuity malt with a bit of toasted grains too. This combines with a mix of grassy and spicy hops. this is a well balanced brew on the nose.
First sip reveals an average body and very fine and tingly carbonation. Smooth texture only adds to the physical traits that make this a very drinkable brew.
Flavor is some toasted grains and caramel mixing together and then finishes with some dry and tea leaf or grassy hop character. Not really too bitter but definitely dries out on my palate after each swallow.
This is a well made brew that isnt overly complex yet is certainly not flawed either. Worth a try if you like the style and want something tasty and sessionable on a visit to NH!

You know you've come to a great brewer when the rows of hops is the first thing you see. Poured from a 32oz can. Color is a dark amber. Nice big head with consistent lacing. Taste is wonderful, smooth and refined. I've had three of Tuckerman beers and have not been disappointed yet.

From the bottle, it pours a lovely hazy caramel colored brown with a light tan head that very slowly diminishes as you enjoy it. Caramel malt in the nose. In the mouth, it is a bit bitter and caramel malt. Nice!
