Notes/Commercial Description:
This is traditional style of altbeir from Düsseldorf, Germany. Alt literally means old in German. Staying as true to the recipe as possible, the Headwall Alt is brewed using German malts, plus German and American hops. Like the Pale Ale, the Headwall Alt is cold conditioned, dry-hopped and krausened in the bottle or keg. Similar to the Pale Ale, the process takes about 30 days.

Pours a deep brown with a thick off white head. Slow to dissipate. Smells of some brown sugar, a bit of bread and biscuit and some faint earthy hops. A hint of alcohol in the end. Taste is light at first. Followed by a bready and toffee filled flavor. The tiniest hint of roasted crystal at the end and some very light hop bitterness. A bit fruity, like yellow raisins as well. Mouthfeel is easy going and solidly drinkable.

Certainly the better of the two from the 12 pk of these and the pale ale. This one is a good session beer that is slightly heartier than another popular alt from northern new England... And more sessionable as well!

Pouring to a cloudy brown color, Headwell Alt has a light aroma of bread and roasted malts. The head of foam looks very nice and it does leave some good lacing as you consume.

Tasting this beer reveals a product that is approachable and it certainly grows on you. The beer has a flavor that follows from its nose, with the tastes of roasted malt, biscuits, bread, some dark fruit, caramel, toffee, and some earthy hops. Nuts and malt seem to be the dominate flavors here and there is only a small touch of bitterness.

This beer is a tad on the sweeter side and while nothing amazing, it is an agreeable, everyday brown ale that most will find good enough to recommend. As I said, it is very approachable and makes a good choice when you want some brown ale to serve guests and don’t want to offend anyone.
