A brown clear brew, with an off-white head, little lacing but good curtains.

Smelling of burned sugar, bread, nuts and chocolate.

Starting with sweet toffee notes, brown bread, huney and nuts, som bitter seeds.

Low carbonation, soft and smooth texture, a very good body, a dry finish.

A malty good maturation of a strong ale vintage 2007.

(The 2009 edition, this is numero: 7527)

Appearance: Slottskällans Strong Ale anno 2009 pours a brown-to-ruby colour along with a high light brown crown of notable height (2½ ", or so) it stays up for a while and slowly disintegrates while leaving some lacing in the process. Some bubbles are seen rising to the surface, bur they're few in numbers and size.

Smell: Darn strange, I get a sharp balsamic vinegary feel to it, I wouldn't say I like it but at the same time it's got that insidious sweetness to it, that you just sorta, kinda, gotta like, you know... Teen-untermensch-vocabulary aside, we get a perky maltiness and notes of fudge as well. Evidently, I'm a bit puzzled about this one!

Taste: Caramelly with bitter highs (bet that sounds strange, right?) raisin-like sweetness, sour notes of (sweet-end) apples and a spicy ending.

Mouthfeel: Thin and mild, a tad flat due to low carbonation.

Drinkability: Besides the disappointment in the "mouthfeel category", this is a fairly balanced brew with a lot of interesting characteristics!

Small off-white head, deep copper colour, lacing. Aroma is malty, sweet, honey, raisins, jam, not much hops. Flavour is malty, noticable ABV, very sweetmalts, coffee, smoke, caramel, jam. Mouthfeel is very smooth and the liquid is rather sticky. the brewery explicitly recommends this for cellaring an I will do just that with my two remaining bottles.

Bottle #2161.

The beer pours with a fizzing sound. The colour is dark win-red with a tint of brown. Liquid is clear. The large pale brown head sinks slowly to a finger thick lid. Almost no lacing occurs.

The bold smell is complex and sweet: Tobacco, alcohol, strong red wine, roasted nuts and almonds. Dried apricots, cherry jam. Some matured notes.

The taste is lighter than the smell. Madeira wine, beef stock, fruits (cherries, sour cherries). It gives a gentle and almost guarded impression. And where is the depth? The aftertaste got flavours of raisins, mixed dried fruits, bitter almonds, wine gums and a hint of matured cheese. The finish is sweet.

The carbonation is mild; the liquid is light and smooth.

I... I'm not really convinced. One year of cellaring seems to have made this beer weaker, not more complex or rounded.
