On tap at the brewery in Greymouth, NZ

Excellent clarity in this very dark brown ale. The body is topped by a creamy tan head that is very durable and leaves the glass almost totally coated.
Both flavor and aroma are about average for style, if a touch more hoppy than a European version. Dark and medium roasted malts lend a lingering malty aftertaste. No burnt notes.

Feel: Medium body with medium carbonation. Smooth.

O: solid version of style.

A slightly above average schwarzbier, burnt roastiness on the finish, thinnish body, bit of brown sugar flavour in there which i didn't particularly like, but a nice enough brew.

Once again with Monteith's beers, the head dies really fast, inoffensive, bland, slightly hoppy, a bit burnt, slightly artificial with some chemicals present, I would drink this again, only for the fact that i bought a 6 pack.

pours out a dark black beer. Shows light very faintly through with red tones. Tan head small and weak. Smells mostly of coffee ,slight smokiness in the background. Taste of coffee, much like a stout,,a dry beer, and has an astringent feel. Besides the astringency i like this beer. No mouthfeel to speak of. A very drinkable beer, slightly dry but not enough to make unpleasant

nice head on top dense black...great massive topographic map of lacing

slight toasty malt nose, but nothing jumps out.

taste is a little better than the nose...some flavor...very smooth but nothing amazing. nice creamy mouthfeel with a slight crispness making this drinkable and sessionable but not sure i'd want to get too bored. one of the lightest black beers i've ever had. a great beer for after mowing the lawn if you want refreshment and some flavor.

Picked up a bottle today at Mid Town Liqour in Tulsa today...

Pours an effervescent chestnut/brown with 3+ fingers of dense tan head. Insane lacing & good head retention

S: Roastyness, a touch of licorice & brown bread

T: Follows the nose, much dryness, some carob & rye spicyness too up front. Brown bread with rye spicyness, plus a touch of roastyness as this warms, subtle hints of pear here too. Finishes roasty & dry with a touch of coffee

MF: Grainyness that works, low carbonation & medium bodied

Really drinkable, good take on the style, this held up well considering how far this had to travel to get down my neck. This one far exceeded my expectations!

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a small head. Smell is of roasted malts with a touch of coffee. Taste is mild compared to the smell, again malts with a hint of coffee. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has average drinkability. Overall this is a fairly decent beer.

Pours black with a small fading tan head.
Nose shows roasted malt, caramel and faint smoke. Pretty nice, quite sweet smelling.
Flavours are along the same lines: roasted malt, soft coffee and a little sweet caramel.
Could do with more carbonation.

Bottle: Poured a light black color beer with a medium foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with light lactic sugar notes is quite enjoyable. Taste is also a well balanced mix between some roasted malt and light sugar notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Nothing earth shattering but well brewed and enjoyable.

Black, well deep brown in the glass with a nice head of tan foam. Subtle carbonation visible. Coffee roasted malt in the nose with a pleasant citrusy hop overtone. Initial taste is the same with a smoky, bitter aftertaste. The thinner body was refreshing. All well balanced and extremely smooth. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

Poured from a 33cl bottle into a pint glass. Best by date of Nov 09 on back label. The color was dark brown with mahogany highlights. Good sliding lace. It had a large 2 finger tan head that slowly settled into a thick collar and whispy film.

Sweet malt aroma with roasted malts as well. Missing the darker roast, smoke and coffee tones that I usually find in schwarzbiers. Was good smelling but could have been better with a addition or two of those. The taste followed the aroma. More sweet than roasted. Really needed something to cut the sweet. Again, not bad but could use a little something more. Mouthfeel was medium with good carb levels but a touch of watery.

Overall, a good but not stellar beer. Mild recommend especially if you are looking to knock New Zealand off your countries tried list. For me, one and done as better ones out there unless someone offered me one.

It is black. Big tan head adorns. Laces well.

Smells roasted, with hints of chocolate and coffee. It's not exuberant, but it's seriously nice.

Taste is good, albeit nothing phenomenal. Roasted malts and a bitter, metallic twang. Something I find common with black beers.

Feel is thin but silky, and it's nice, clean and refreshing.

Easy to drink, and a very nice example. Glad I picked this up.

Pours a dark ruby brown with a fair amount of tan head that fades away pretty quickly. Smells of sweet roast malt and a little coffee, very pleasant. Tastes drier than the smell led me to believe. It's sweeter than average, but most of the flavor is just roastiness. Not much in the way of hops or bitterness but that would be too much I think. Mouthfeel is pretty heavy. A little harsh on the tip of the tongue, with light carbonation all over. All in all, it's very drinkable, fairly well balanced, nothing is really overpowering. I like it, I'll probably get it again.

330ml Bottle: best before the end of Oct 2012, whoops. Poured into a Westvleteren chalice on 7th Dec 2012, a bit late!

Looked impressive: lovely dark body with a deep tan head of foam (well for 60 seconds anyway).

Initial aroma leans towards a Stout maltiness smell and mild chocolate notes waft through the air: good for a Black Lager.

The taste is also Stoutish, but with the lager crispness reminding you this isn't at ale based beer. Those aforementioned chocolate notes can be found it the taste as well as in the nose along with slightly burnt caramel flavour.

A lot better than I thought it would be and could well be my highest scoring beer of this style so far.

A - Pours a dark brown almost black colour with an of white head that retains well

S - Expresso and toffe are the main aromas.

T - Dark chocolate and toffee with a well rounded roasted finish.

M - A bit watery and slightly overcarbonated.

D - Good in places but bad in others

Monteith's Black

Appearance: Dark brown, small head, and okay lacing.

Smell: Dark malts, some cocoa, and slight grain.

Taste: Dark malts, light coffee, slight grain, slight hop, and a very light chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light and smooth.

Overall:
This isn't bad. It isn't very complex, but it is nicely brewed and smooth.

wasnt sure what to expect being my first schwarzbier.
almost black in color, with just a bit of light breaking through at the edges showing a reddish-black color.
forms a very large dirty white head that leaves a lacing on the glass as it settles.
dark malty aroma. more of a black malt than roasted or chocolate, though i am guessing since i havent used plain black malt before.
taste is much more chocolaty than the aroma let on. just a slight bitterness that doesnt get in the way of the malty sweetness.
mouthfeel is light but smooth.
im not used to pairing beer with food, but this would have to go pretty good with dessert.

Thin mouth feel, low fizz and not much head. Smells of charcoal malts with a slight hint of vegemite. Low acidity and very clean on the palate for a dark beer, without much of an aftertaste. The flavour is fairly straight forward, with hints of caramel biscuit as it warms up. Very smooth, easy drinking.

A nice deep coffee/coke colour with little head or lacing. I got hardly any aroma from this except a faint coffee malt note. Flavour is great and full of coffee, dark chocolate and malt. Quite sweet but very well balanced. A bit like treacle in flavour too but for a full bodied schwarzbier not sticky. This makes it more drinkable than some schwarz I've had even though the flavour is more restrained. I had this beer years ago and loved it. Now that I can get it easily I think it will be a regular. It's cheaper than the German gear and unlike those (which I love a lot) I can drink a few Monteith's without being overwhelmed by their bigger flavour. This is the best Monteith I've had so far.

Pours a deep dark near black with minimal cap of khaki head, little retention and lacing. Scent is dominated by roasted yet sweet malts with the faintest hints of earth, coffee, chocolate and fruit. Taste brings the same qualities of the scent, nothing overpowering but none of the ingredients evene stand out. Lighter side of medium bodied, smooth and lightly carbonated. A decent drinkable beer that does nothing wrong, but doesnt wow in any way. Heck, I really just wanted to try a bee rfrom New Zealand, so no loss.

This pours a true black. Not a lot of head to speak of.

A touch of milk chocolate on the nose. I was hoping for some darker aromas.

Ok the coffee comes through a lot better on the palate. Ties in quite nicely with the sweet chocolate.

A lighter mouthfeel for a dark beer.

A lighter style dark (which I normally don't like) but I think I could have a few of these and enjoy them all.

This is another I have been chasing after reading good things, & this didn't dissappoint.
Wonderful dark opaque look with good brownish bready biscuity head.
Burnt notes in smell & taste...caramel toffee sweetness with coffee, some mocha & biscuit...quite complex & interesting, definately not boring.
Mouthfeel was medium, creamy & full bodied, with a soft but alive carbonation. This was a very easy drinker & a six pack is on the cards next time (only tasted tested 1 stubby this time)

330ml bottle bought from GapWines, Belfast..

Poured a very deep black / brown colour. Burnt brown head poured pretty thick, foamy and meringue like then faded to light covering with thick edging... some light lines of lacing ring the glass...

Aroma - Slightly washed out notes of lightly roasted bread, toasted malts, metallic notes, black coffee, some dark brown sugar sweetness, light nuttiness, some blackcurrant and raisin fruitiness, faint liquorice traces, some graininess coming through, dusty hints...

Taste - Toasted maltiness mixed with sweet nutty notes, toasted buttery bread, some molasses / treacle sweetness, light chocolate mixed with black cherry and blackcurrant fruits, light nutmeg and pepper spiciness, some light vegetal traces just noticeable, cola hints...

Feel - Smooth initially then a little sharpness comes through... medium bodied... pretty quaffable and sessionable at 5.2%

Overall - A very pleasant find this one... nothing groundbreaking but a well made and very quaffable example of a Schwarzbier.... worth a try...
