Nov. 2005. Rerate, on tap in Hamburg. This is a fairly average standard pilsener, but the hoppy bitterness in the finish was actually greater than I remembered it from the bottles I’ve sampled earlier. Drinkable.

.5L can
Clear and gold with a decent head that recedes rapidly leaving a little lacing and smells like a typical pilsener.
Tastes rather blah! like a Danish beer and not what I expect from a northern German Pilsener thin without any flavour of malts or the hops bite.
I am very disappointed in this beer and understand its budget price! It will likely be another decade before I try this beer again.
There are better beer up here! Try a Jever preferably on tap

Clear golden color with white head. Aroma is mostly grassy and earthy with some clean malt underneath. Taste has dusty grains, earthy bitterness and some cardboard. Medium to light body with medium carbonation. Not as clean as expected for a "traditional" german pils.

Review: Can of Holsten Pilsener Premium: 4.8% ABV

This typical Northern German beer is brewed according to the strict purity laws of the Reinheitsgebot of 1516 using only the finest quality, pure, all natural ingredients – hops, barley malt and spring water. Standard issue for German brews.

The aroma is grainy with a nice hoppy smell , giving a typical pilsner smell, all lovely and sweet.

On pour a large frothy head appeared, which didn’t hang around. The colour is a clear golden yellow colour. There is some fair lacing. Looks decent enough.

Enjoyed the taste, a nice balanced crispy mouthful of flavours (barley, grain, yeasty) whizzing around, all tasty. The taste is mostly grassy hops with a hint of sweet grain. Lager taste

There was a hoppy bitter aftertaste which was a little strong in the end

Overall it is a very smooth lager, not strong but clean, crisp and very drinkable, definitely a good session beer. I felt it had a lovely feel to it which was soft on the mouth. I liked it, best I had in a long time, nice and refreshing, and one I will return to again in the future.

.5L plastic bottle acquired at a Lidl market in Berlin. It has a cola-esque plastic resealable screwtop and the label is unintereting. 4.8% per the label. Served cold. Expectations are low given the presentation. This is definitely a budget beer. Reviewed live as a pilsener since the label clearly identifies it as such. Side-poured into a Berliner Kindl Weisse glass.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Thin white head of quarter finger width recedes fully within ten seconds, leaving no lacing. Seems weak and pathetic, but not undercarbonated per se.

BODY: Translucent transparent pale copper of average vibrance. It doesn't look watery or weak, unlike many budget pilseners. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

It's a pretty basic looking pilsner, and is far from unique or special. I'm optimistic, and there are no obvious flaws here aside from the piss-poor excuse for a head.

AROMA: Grainy corn. Clean barley. Generic pilsener malts. There's nothing fresh, evocative, or full here, but it's not unpleasant. There's some muted generic bittering hop character - probably Saaz if I had to guess, or some kind of noble hop. No yeast character, alcohol, or off-notes are detectable - which is surprising; I expected at least some plastic character given the presentation. Not a bad aroma for a pilsener, but it does evoke cheap adjunct to an extent.

A pleasant aroma of average strength. I've definitely encountered worse.

TEXTURE: Smooth and wet, with some mild overcarbonation and sharpness. Unrefreshing - especially since it dries a bit right on the finish - but approachable. This texture is not a good complement to the taste, nor is it good for the style, but it's passable. Light to medium-bodied, with a bit too much heft and weight on the palate for such a shallow beer.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh per se.

TASTE/OVERALL: Muted corn adjunct joins with generic pilsner malts and cheap barley to comprise the body of the beer. And that body is really all there is. There's no real overt hop or yeast character to speak of, and the whole of the beer is incredibly simple and rudimentary. Very much a no-frills pils (and by the way, "No Frills Pils" has a nice ring to it...) and far from complex, subtle, or intricate. Painfully shallow. Average flavour duration and intensity. As characterless and mundane as it is, it's actually a pretty decent beer at this price point. It's not watery or overly sweet, and there are no plastic or metallic tones to ruin it. It would make a good cooking beer.

I wouldn't buy it again, but it's a respectable bargain pils which exceeded expectations. You could do far worse for the price, and I'll enjoy finishing the bottle.

Supermarket beer. Cheap and easy, came in a plastic bottle.
Big creamy head, golden beer, a lot of carbonation.
First smell is a lot of grassy hops. Then a sweet cookie dough. Actually very nice.
Taste is disappointing. Mostly corn malts. Leaving it a few minutes actually makes it unpleasant.
Aftertaste is a bit sharp.
Overall, the beer promises more than it deliveres. It seemed like an interesting choice in this category, but then suddenly it is just not.
