Nothing too special about this beer. There is not a whole lot to it and doesn't really bring a smile to your face. This is basically a party beer along the lines of what BMC beers are here in America. The only this beer really has going for it is the matching game on the reverse side of the label. I believe there were 9 total different labels, thats 3 pieces for each of the 3 puzzles. If you get 3 to match and send it in you receive a poster, or perhaps more beer, unfortunately the beer doesn't seem to be a real prize.

A: Almost identical to the Astra radler with a bit more head and a bit more carbonation.
S: Far maltier than I remember. Dirty malt is all I smell.
T: Funny, it's nothing like I remember it being. From memory, this beer was the closest thing I had tasted to an IPA from a German beer, but this one is all malt with a sweet aftertaste. But it also doesn't remind of a pilsner. And somehow the flavor in conjunction with the carbonation is a bit stinging.
M: Sandy and gritty with a stinging carbonation.
O: Surprisingly average. Strange how memory can fail us. Oh well, where's the next beer?

Gold can poured into a small 8 ounce O'Hara glass. Pale gold with a flurry of rising bubbles, a fluffy head of white foam that rises above the rim, forming sturdy crags and peaks. Head lasts for a bit.
Smells like swill, sulfuric lager yeast and bland wet cereal grains.
Watery insipid feel, club soda, soggy wet grains, slight astringency. I drank a PBR right after this and it was so much cleaner and drinkable. This has too much astringency and blah papery grains in the taste to be decent a session beer.

15th Sep 2013.
Dumpy 33cl bottle taken on the patio of my Ste Maxime hotel after I'd brought this over the Alps with a few other beers.
Typical Pilsner look: bright, clean, clear and golden.
No smell worthy of note: gets my standard 3 for a non-smelling lager/pilsner.
The taste was a let down too, dry and bitter, which was fine, but the metallic feel the flavour gave off was very nasty, almost didn't finish it. The beer was well in date and it had settled in the room fridge for two days before opening, but I wasn't impressed.

Gift from a friend
A - An straw color with a fair head retention. Nothing great.
S - Nice nose with a faint floral nose. Good for a pilsner.
T - Nice dry bready taste with a touch of astringency. A nice bitterness and pretty good character.
M - Nice drink ability. A little prickly in the mouth but refershing.
D - Great afternoon beer. Worth a try to compare to american pilseners. Good flavor for the 4.9% strength.

A - Very clear, decent head and lots of carbonation.
S - Mostly metallic, and slightly sour and bitter.
T - Tastes like dirty pennies and a bit of alcohol, only the slightest hint of malt or beer flavour. Lingers like a bad fart.
M - Quite drying, a little bit rough, but refreshing I suppose.
D - The odd metallic penny tastes keeps me from getting another.

Purchased from the Kaiser's in Berlin.
Served slightly chilled.
Pours a crystal clear straw yellow with a quarter inch white head that dissipates after ~1 minute down to nothing.
Aroma begins with noble hops, but then changes to a raw graininess as it warms.
Taste is an extremely light balance of earthy noble hop flavor and again that raw grain flavor. Very watery.
Mouthfeel is watery with very little carbonation for the style.
Overall, mediocre at best. A disappointment compared to other widely available offerings here in Germany.

A: Pours a light golden color with a nice head and a bit of lacing.
S: Mild aroma of grain with a light mixture of malt sweetness and herbs.
T: Taste is a mild mixture of sweetness and grain, some bitterness through to the finish.
F: Fairly moderate body and somewhat refreshing.
O: Typical Nord-Deutsch Pils. Not quite the beer I remember, but Astra is synonamous with Hamburg & the Reeperbahn.

330 ml bottle in Hamburg
Clear yellow colour, nice head in one finger thickness which lasts quite long, decent lacing. Aroma is mostly malty. Taste is quite simple malty with growing bitterness which also dominates the aftertaste. Very clean.
Mouthfeel is quite thick.
I liked this one - a nice Pilsener, not to be missed when in Hamburg and visiting Reeperbahn and the site of former Astra brewery.

Bottle poured into a clear plastic cup in Berlin. Unfortunately, this was all that was available. Reviewed from notes.
A: Four finger head of nice cream, decent thickness, and good retention. Clear yellow colour.
Sm: Cream and barley. Some hops. A mild strength scent.
T: A plethora of cream hops over top a very generic lagery barley body. Only two acts. Some bad bitterness enters on the climax and lingers through the finish; it's very unwelcome. Poorly built and balanced.
Mf: Badly dry, murdering any opportunity to refresh. Too coarse for the style.
Dr: Serve cold. Very affordable by German standards, but a poor beer overall. The cream is nice, but it's too dry to be drinkable.

A classic in Hamburg and on the Reeperbahn. You cant go to Hamburg and not try the local swill - Astra Urtyp. Like going to Scotland and not trying Tennents.
330ml dumpy bottle in some god forsaken bar off the reeperbahn where i saw my mate actually kiss the pub owners dog for a bottle of this stuff!
A - Poured into a seidel mug, producing a 2 finger rocky head, with a pale straw body with lively beading throughout, average brussels lace going down the glass.
S- Not very interesting, some faint malts with more of a fresh hoppy character
T - Sugary sweetness as it hits the tongue finishing quickly with a sharp hop bitterness with no real lingering afterthought, however, not watery like BMC. all too quick really!
M- nice lively spritzy carbonation with a good mouthfeel, not too thin.
D- This will never be the best beer in the world, but will always beat BMC, as it has slighty more character to it. Astra Urtyp will always remind me of Hamburg.

The colour is clear yellow; the two finger head is white and airy. Lots of fine lacing occurs.
The smell is malty. Some bitter flavours, hints of sour dough and butter.
The taste is quite simple. Some notes of dough, bread-like malt. A mild slowly growing clean bitterness with some sour flavours and a hint of butter and cream. The aftertaste is bitter with some grassy notes.
The carbonation is mild to medium. The liquid is medium smooth.
Somewhere between the German Pilsener and Pale Euro Lager styles, its just another German macro beer
