Out of a can, sent via mail by a friend of a friend from Hamburg, poured a paled gold. The head formed rather frothy and thick for a pils, with decent retention, and left traces of lacing.

Them smell offered plenty of yeast, a strong sense of grass, and a hint of citrus and spice. The flavor was dominated by grass and yeast, semi-bitter hoppiness, and then complemented by suggestions of lemon and corriander.

The mouth is very light with ample carbonation and a semi-bitter hoppy finish. The drinkability is high, and the flavor solid. Not a bad example of the style at all .

A 440ml can with a BB of April 2012. ABV stated as 5%.

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A clear pale straw colour with good carbonation. Forms a decent head of frothy white foam that doesn't last long before subsiding. Smells of very little; subtle hints of light grain and perhaps corn or stewed veg, with a faint metallic note. Weak.

Tastes of light malt with a mild, dry bitterness. Faint notes of grain and stewed leaves. There is a metallic hint that isn't particularly nice, and a harsh bitter flavour on the finish. Mouthfeel is tingly and dry (for a lager), but watery. A harsh bitter note in the aftertaste.

Not all that nice. Weak flavour, and the notes that stand out are the unpleasant ones. Doesn't compare favourably with other industrial lagers (which isn't saying much in any case). Avoid.

Crystal clear and bright golden in color with a bright white head that holds well and leaves some nice lace at the outset of the glass. Very nice appearance! The aroma is nicely hoppy - grassy, floral, herbal. (It should be noted, however, that more often than not this beer is found "skunked"/"catty"/"lightstruck/isomerized. A bottle directly out of a fresh, sealed case is best). Some light, grainy malt aroma is present as well. The body is medium-light with a crisp carbonation that softens quickly. The flavor starts with a burst of hop bitterness and flavor, and then settles into a supple, lightly sweet maltiness. It finishes drying as the lightly sweet malt fades and some lingering hop character emerges. This is a very nice example of the southern German pilsner style.

Pours a golden colour with a white head that dissipates quickly. Smell is akin to Warsteiner, with a little less hops, but that same sweet malt. Taste, hmm... Hops, some weird burnt taste, which is odd for this style, which unfortunately ruins the crispness I am expecting, bit more hops in the finish though. Definitely not as smooth as the beer I just had, and sadly less drinkable... I want another Warsteiner.

Small brown 275ml bottle, 5.0%, brewed somewhere within the European Union for 'Carlesberg'.

Looked good, crisp, clear, golden yellow with a head that was whiter than white (as the Daz adverts used to say).

Do lagers smell of anything really? No, this one doesn't either. Just a beery, yeasty, hoppy, malty, weak mix.

Fairly dry in taste, I drank this while making a Beef Lasagne, this is a kitchen drink, not for serious supping. Can't get excited about it, but it is not bad enough to slag off, all in all, a typical European fizzy lager.

Poured a medium straw hue with a quarter finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell consisted of an upfront spicy noble hop with a soft biscuity malt.

The taste featured a mild hop spice and a thin malt, which was a bit watery.

The mouthfeel was clean and crisp, but again thin.

Overall an easy to drink but nothing too interesting. It could use a deeper hop presence.

green and gold 500ml can. dated aug 06. 5%abv.

pours a standard clear pale yellow color with little head despite the large number of large bubbles coming to the surface. pretty uninspiring start.

good spicy/grassy aroma. comes across as fresh even though its only a month before its bb date. a light sweetness accompanies the hoppiness, but doesnt distract.

flavors stay pretty light with a good balance. crisp bitterness at the start gives it a very refreshing feel. minimal hop or malt flavor gives it a quick finish.

well, pretty happy with this one. nothing too complex or ground breaking, but would make a great summer afternoon session beer.
too bad its the middle of winter :(

Not the best german pilsner and not my first choice at the bar I was in but this was a second beer and the only thing on the list i hadn't tried yet while in Germany. Not a terrible beer but not the best on the list. Would recommend good heineken or becks on draft over this one.

Holsten Pilsner...

Appearance-pours out a solid golden color, fizzy and large white head which sticks around for a good five minutes and then phases out.

Smell-light hoppy aroma with grains surrounding it, not much else but what's there is fine.

Taste-Heavier than some other German pilsners, hoppy and grainy, slick on the toungue but not watery, goes down very smoothly.

Mouthfeel-easy enough to drink down, the light hoppiness is welcome, good stuff.

Drinkability-a little added kick at 5.20% ABV yet still flavorful enough to gulp down on a hot summer day.

Overall-a little bit more ballsy than your average German Pilsner, but it's a good one at that. Another true German pilsner that is refreshing and flavorful.

Beer is a deep yellow with a good head when from the tap. The smell had a hop aroma and a bit skunky. The taste came across as bitter and had a slightly bitter aftertaste. A decent beer for 1-2 drinks at the most.

Another typical North german brew, leaning towards being a bit bitter.

This is a bit more pale than your average pils, leaves a little lacing, smell is sweet and malty, not too bad. Taste isn't exactly what i expected, a little too sweet, bitterness is evident but not overbearing, wasn't the smoothest going down but wasn't that bad, i wouldn't go out of my way to get this one again but it was worth a try.

An example of good pilsen premium beer, i try this beer in christmas, with mexican food and is so good its presentation in a 5 liter Keg had mor flavor than its other presentation 12oz bottle; appearance like a sundown, smell and taste well ballanced; mouthfeel fantastic, 100% recommended.

Pours a clear golden yellow, small white head forms, no lace to speak of, pretty bubbly. Smell is sweet and malty, pretty light, not really any hop presence. Taste is malty, theres a bit of grassy hop bitterness near the end but otherwise its pretty bland. Smooth, easy drinking, not a lot of flavour but slightly better than most crap pilseners.
