Well I haven't reviewed a beer in a while now and this seems like a fine time to start up again.
I've got a stout little 11.2 oz bottle picked up at Bierkraft in Brooklyn. My buddy and I drank one of these the other night after a few other goodies, I enjoyed it thoroughly albeit a bit drunkenly, tonight I'll take a little more time with it. This bottle lacks a freshness date but is marked as being 2007 vintage.
Poured fairly aggressively into a tulip, the beer has a nice finger head but no gush like my friend and I had the other night, or like I've read in some other reviews. A beautiful hazy orange beer, frothy head looks quite appetizing.
Aroma is hops and yeast. Certainly some clove and malt in there, smells nice but is not an iconic grapefruity IPA by American standards. Not that I expected it to be. Aroma reminds me of perhaps 50% belgian pale ale, 50% American IPA. Apricot is the most apparent fruit note.
Taste is an almost salty spice on the front, followed by a moderately sweet, citrusy finish. Somewhat apple-cidery. Bitterness is extremely subdued and barely lingers on the palate, finishes watery-clean with a hint of a bitter tingle and a strange element of sour hidden in the mix. I suspect these hops are significantly mellowed as the beer is 2 years old.
Mouthfeel is moderately syrupy, and unexpected low on the carbonation. Somewhat cleansing of the palate, would be almost effervescent if it was more strongly carbonated.
Drinkability... hmmm. I hesitate to place it too high, as I find this beer a little strange. Not off-putting or unpleasant, but if it was between another one and something else, I'd probably go with something else.
Overall, I think this is a bit of a miss for me. I really enjoyed it last time, but perhaps that was a combination of novelty and pre-drinking that left me a little less perceptive. I have been enjoying belgian IPA's recently and this one is not quite up to par with some of the other standbys, piraat for instance. Hops here are a little "tinny", I'm sure this is at least partially (mostly?) due to the age of the brew, but taken as a whole it's a bit too clean and one-dimensional for my liking.

A: The beer is hazy yellow in color and has some amber hues along with some fine particulates floating in suspension and a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that died down, leaving a pillow of bubbles in the center, a collar around the edge of the glass, and a thin head in between.
S: Moderate aromas of fruity yeast are present in the nose along with some notes of sweetness.
T: The taste is quite yeasty, but from start to finish tastes like you are drinking the large clumps of yeast that are present at the bottom of the glass if you swirl the bottle and pour out all of the yeast at the bottom. No bitterness is perceptible, but there's
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate to high amount of carbonation.
O: This beer didn't taste anything like a Belgian IPA because no traces of hops were noticeable in the smell or taste. However, since I'm a person who likes yeast, I really liked how much yeast there was in this, and not just at the bottom of the bottle.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy amber, with an impressive cap of foam; a smattering of lace is left behind
Smell: Rather sweet aromatics, with fermented honey, lemon, pear and banana esters
Taste: Bready, up front, with the sweet honey flavors dominating the front; in the middle, the fruit (lemon, pear and banana) flavors emerge, with grassy bitterness developing, after the swallow; in the finish, there is a sulfur and chalk element that joins the profile
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with high carbonation
Overall: I am not crazy about the combination of flavors here; rather like a heavily hopped Tripel with a chalky finish

A: A curious color on this one. Pours lighter than most IPAs with a massive pure white head that stays for quite some time. Lots of bubbles. After the head dies down pouring more in yields another explosion of bubbles that's fun to watch.
S: Lots of fruit here. Lemony, subtle hoppiness. Orange, some earthy notes. Pine.
T: Certainly not what I was expecting at all. The fruitiness of the belgian style really comes through again being lemony and orangy. Hops are a little subdued and alcohol comes through a bit. The flavors fade considerably on the second couple of sips and this drinks more like an american style ale or so. A little too light I think.
M: Sits light but not overly bitter. Lingers with some fruitiness on the palate.
This beer really performed well in most areas but the light taste of subdued flavors left me wanting. If you're looking to introduce someone to IPAs this might be your beer but it really shows a little belgian style and a little IPA but doesn't embrace either.

Chocked full of Belgian fruity-spicy interplay but with the intense hop charater to evoke high bitterness, and flavor to boot.
Nearly explosive with carbonation, the beer needs to be opened over a sink. The highly effervescent pour delivers a yeasty haze of golden hues and a creamy off white foam that retains and laces in classic Belgian fashion.
Sharp aromas of spices come from all angles- the expected peppery notes of from yeast but also the earthy character of hops. Fruity esters of under-rippened berries, crabapples, and young pears decorate the nose with a lot of aggression and zest.
But the flavors open up to the maltier aspects of the beer- the terse pilsner sweetness of powdered sugar, light breads, and raw pilsner malt give a rustic malty sweetness that softly introduces the aggressive flavors to come. Hoppy lemongrass, earthy spice, and grassy, stem, and citrus pith taste rises just after the introduction of malt. The mid palate also introducted the balanced taste of white pepper, corriander, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg as a juxtoposition to the dry fruity character of apples, pears, and lemons that are usually reserved for Saisons. All this culminates in such a way to meld into a potpouri of taste taht both blend in melody yet combat in contrast.
Moderate, but seemingly lighter in body- the beer has a lively effervescent spirit that lifts the malt off of the tongue and ushers the beer into finsih with little effort or sugary weight. The dry-malty mouthfeel reserves much of the brunt of hop dryness, alcohol warmth, and spicy zest until late in the finish that lingers well into aftertaste with flavors of fruity, pepper, and hoppy bitterness.
Likely a Belgian Tripel in its base style, but liberally hopped to extend the hop flavor and dryness, the woody-grassy-spicy character of Stering Golding hops, Saaz, and Hersbrucker types play vividly on the palate of this characterful ale. I would love to have this beer at its peak of freshness!

Boy bottle extra.
Surprisingly soft aroma with more yeast and malt than any notable hops. Kinda' sweet with a wort quality. Soft phenolic, mild spice and more just yeasty quality. I like it more as time goes.
Hard to pour with out a fair amount of yeast joining the journey. Huge full white head that settles at a slow pace.
Hop flavor is tame, with a greater presence of hops in a growing bitterness that is never excessive and adds to a very long and enjoyable finish. Base seems like a golden ale. Has a fairly strong vanilla taste at time (I'm assuming it's a yeast thing). Reasonably complex drink that continues to offer change until the very last pull. However, a little sloppy and messy at times.
Thanks Todd.

A: Pours a hazy golden orange with a puffy, pillowy white head that takes several minutes to settle.
S: Aromas of caramel, citrus, and spicy, grassy hops are present on the nose. The overall effect is rather medicinal, but still quite appealing.
T: Notes of mandarin orange, lemon rind, apricot, lime, grass, herbs, caramel, pepper, and tobacco reveal themselves on the palate. This Belgian IPA is not as sweet as some. The finish is herbal, bitter, and hoppy with plenty of tart citrus and herb notes.
M: Medium bodied, fairly firm, and relatively dry with gentle carbonation for the style. Despite the 7% abv, this ale is very drinkable.
O: This is another winning Belgian IPA that could be an A quality beer with a little more maturity. I bet this would mellow out nicely if cellared for awhile.

Hazed gold color with big poof of white foam, decent rings of lacing. Scent is of juicy and fruity hops blended with a spicy and hay like backbone. Taste follows scent with juicy grapefruit and the backbone is lightly musted and grainy malt, finishes with a light sweetness. Medium bodied, grainy on palate and active carbonation. Solid Belgian IPA which brings some farmhouse qualities.

This brew poured out as a murky looking golden color with a white foamy head on top. The smell of the beer doesn't have a lot of hops on the nose but does have more of an earthy spice to it. The taste of the beer is a lot like most Belgian Tripels, this beer to me doesn't resemble an IPA that much. The mouthfeel was decent but nothing too special either. Overall this beer isn't really a good example of a Belgian IPA in my opinion.
