From 04/25/11 notes. Had on tap at Churchkey in Washington, DC.
a - Pours a hazy orange color with no head at all and no carbonation evident. Looks flat.
s - Smells of wine, oak, fruit, and strong alcohol. Light yeast and spice, but very strong on the alcohol.
t - Tastes is strong alcohol, wine/port, oak, light fruity malts, and light spice. Again, the booze just dominates this.
m - Medium body and no carbonation; pretty sure it's flat.
o - Overall I just didn't think this was a very good beer; the alcohol is so strong it takes away from everything else. I got a 4 oz. sample of this and 2 oz.'s of it was too much. Not something I would order again.

Not quite as good as expected. Poured at a good temperature; it was a gusher; with a small, cream-colored head that settled to a thin island and ring, no lace. Color would be a clear, but for the large amount of tiny particulates in suspension, amber. Aroma is yeast, malt, mustard, fruit. Flavor is more bitter then tang, then sweet. Although in the finish it's sweet and tang that linger. Otherwise, also like nose. Body has some clashes between bitter and tang along with some heavy boozieness.

A very ood beer that uses a unique blend of techniques and ingredients to achieve a finished beer with peculiarly alluring spicey, fruity, vinous flavor.
The pour delivers a slightly milky copper/orange color with a dainty, short-lived head. Lots of yeast sediment gives an overtly 'yeasty' look.
Sharp aromas of vinous tartness, cidery apples, under-rippened berries and pears, fresh woods, and rye-like spiciness. Fairly acidic to the nose, the beer has distinct wine-like, champagne notes.
Flavors follow up on the winey start with a blend of white wines and champagne. Pears, apples, berries, and peaches contribute fruity flavor and tartness. The mustard seed seems to reinforce alcohol flavors with a spicy/pungent rye-like character and a slightly rich tartness. Acidic, spicy, and fruity throughout, the beer is distinctly Belgian that is 'encouraged' by peppery spice and calvados woods/alcohols that give a spicy boozy/spicy woody taste.
Acidic throughout, the early carbonation has a prickly effervesence that reinforce the spiciness and sharpness of the beer. As carbonation takes the mouthfeel from bubbly to finish, the beer's alcoholic feel is felt in the moderately dry and challenging warm finish.
This beer is definately one that takes strong Belgian golden ales and pushes the fruity/spicy/woody character with cognac barrel use and mustard seed. These give intriguing taste and texture, but subtly unusual in comparisons to Duvel or Chimay White.

750mL brown glass pry-top. Fresh off the truck! Cap stamped "Melchior CALV196, JAN 2013 LOT 469."
Pours with ZeRo carbonation. Lame. A sort of orange amber color. Nose is all about orange marmalade and honey comb (wax)! Some hint of barrel funk comes through and a little apple-y goodness.
Palate is (flat) but tasty. Earthy mushroom-y Calvados flavors dominate. Some of that honey flavor comes onto the palate while something a little salty rolls through and then eau de vie and caramel settle on the finish.
Notes: Despite this being totally flat (which really annoys me), this is a tasty and really complex brew. But then again, I'm a sucker for anything Calvados-related.

Bottle opened by weeheavysd. Thanks! Consumed on 12/13/2009 and poured into a snifter. The beer is hazy golden with a small white head.
The nose is very oaky, with notes of wheat, cereal grains, brandy, and ripe granny smith apples. The nose essentially translates to the flavor, with perhaps a little less oak. There's a light astringency on the palate. Notes of apples, grain, light phenols, and brandy are evident. The finish exhibits a slight alcohol burn.

Draft at Farmers' Cabinet.
Pours a hazy pale golden orange color with golden yellowish-apricot hues and a two finger frothy white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Chunks of lace left behind.
Sweet boozy aroma with a strong barrel character. Hints of earthy oak, vanilla and brandy along with some funky yeast, mustard seed and citrus fruit.
Medium bodied with a nice combination of earthy oak, zesty spice and boozy heat. Lots of spice especially coriander and pepper up front countered by earthy oak, vanill and prominent boozy sweet brandy. Althought the spirit flavor is prominent, it's not too hot making it pretty quaffable. Sweet citrus notes with more of a pronounced mustard character than the base version. Spicy finish with lemon and orange peel toward the end of the swallow with a nice warm finish.

A- pours a hazey golden color with a thin white head that quickly recedes. Some lacing.
S- soft oak aromas blend with tart apple brandy and acidic Sauvignon blanc like vineous notes. Warm alchohol and some yeastiness on the finish.
T- tart green apple skin, calvados apple brandy and a touch fructose sweetness that leaves the palate as soon as it comes. Soft oak and high acidity. Finish is some spicy phenolic alchohol and mustard seed kick.
MF- slick slightly thin mouthfeel with a light body and low carbonation.
D- incredibly complex and very drinkable for what should be a major sipper.
Overall a great beer. My only critic is the body is a little thin.

Melchior Oak Aged Calvados Barrel goes into the glass a fairly bright orange color with some soft gold spots here and there. A nice steady pour yielded a bright white cap of foamy bubbles but that faded rather quick. No stick.
Smell is bright and pungent with citrus rind, oak, vanilla, apple, calvados, an earthy yeast strain. Not smelling any mustard. Up front, the taste reminds me of a few funky saison's I've had recently.
Pungent with ripe fruit, apple, orange drip, earthy, spicy yeast. Some grassy hops in the middle and a nice oaky/vanilla towards the end with a hint of more apple. Again, it does not cut the mustard, don't get me wrong, this is delicious, but the must must have faded.
Feel is a nice medium and about on par with a Duvel except the taste is all over. It's carbed up to a point where the beer is not dead, yet over time that drips down.
Towards the end of my glass there was the littliest bit of yeast that went down the hatch, PUTRID. Really nasty and unpleasant. Anybody opening bottles of this, please keep as much yeast out of your pour as possible, it kinda ruins things. This is brilliant beer though.

Had on tap at Brasserie Beck. Allegedly one of only two kegs in the US.
A: cloudy, orange, hazy appearance. Almost opaque. Slight amount of white, foamy head. No visible sediment.
S: sour apple, champagne, iced tea with lemon, wildflowers, and bitter herbs.
T: A lot less bitter and a lot more sweet than I'd anticipated. The most malt-forward Belgian-style beer I've ever had. Underlying apple, oak, herbal hop bitterness and Belgian yeast.
M: Almost completely flat. Very fine bubbles, and relatively few of them. Medium viscosity.
D: Not bad at all. Glad I got to try it. It was easily sippable, yet it complimented the food well.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,
A: Pours a hazy goldenrod with a soapy white head, leaving some nice lace.
S: Cider apples, wood, enjoyable.
T: The barrel character is quite overt here. It's almost like you're not drinking beer, the apple flavour takes over. Very cider like, green apple heavy, with notes of Belgian yeast.
M: Has the beer, not a cider mouthfeel. Medium/full-bodied, smooth and easy on the palate. Light carbonation. Really no hint of the 11.5%.
D: Any fan of hard cider should enjoy this. It's very flavourful and is making me a huge fan of Calvados aged beers the more I try them.

Pours a clean orange-ish color with a small white head. In the aroma, sweet oak with a note of fruitiness. In the taste, sweet to dry fruitiness and some nice oaky notes. An oak bite and medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry fruitiness and oak in the aftertaste. Hides the ABV very well, quite smooth and nice fruit notes.

Sampled from the bottle at the Pre-ZBF fest at Alvinne. The beer poured a slightly cloudy, bright orange color with a vibrant white head. The nose is a bit fruity, some apples maybe, a touch of wood and a alcohol character. The taste gives a bit of spicy and wood. The alcohol taste comes through but mends well with the other flavors including a nice malt and fruit presence. As the beer warms a bit it opens up a strong alcohol character from the barrel aging. A very fine beer from Alvinne. This will get even better with some bottle time.
