330ml bottle poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

AP: No head on this at all, just some off white/cream coloured bubbles hugging the glass. Darker in colour than I anticipated, like a deep mahogany brown, though it has some coppery and reddish hues when held up to the light.
AR: Apple cider vinegar, wet sourdough German pretzels, pear, grape skins, tart green apples, Belgian yeast funk and damp musty oak. Smells like it should be tasty.
T: Bloody hell, this is one sour SOB. Vinegar smacks your tongue and puckers your mouth. Haven't had one quite this sour in a while or maybe ever. Once I get past the initial shock of the strong vinegar I get the fruits I scented in the nose: grape skins (foremost), tart green apples and pear. The funky Belgian yeast comes into play on the back end with that dank oakiness as well. I need another sip or two to sort this out proper. A decent amount of juicy fruits on the aftertaste that are fighting with the sour vinegar for dominance. I love me some sours, but this one is slightly off balance.
M: Very acidic, low carbonation, seems like it does more than cleanse the palate...sort of like how Lava soap does a bit more than cleanse your hands. I do get a nice vinous and slightly viscous feel from the barrel and the fruits.
OV: It is tasty, especially on the finish, but a bit out of balance for my liking. Just a tad too sour/tart to receive a higher rating. Still totally drinkable, just not outstanding.

Man....first smelling this beer I knew it was a great Our Bruin Flemish Sour. Smells of sour cherry with a mild barrel funk ending. Very dark mahogany in appearance. Nice white head with a light purple hue...stayed around awhile to a thin lacy head. A small swear brought a little 1/4 finger head back. The taste was what I was hoping for. Sour cherries up front that hits your back sides of your toungue. Then the tart barrel funky sour hits the middle of the tongue to finish...hanging on at the end is a dry almost earthy after taste. This was a great beer. A must have if you like this style.

The beer pours a dark brownish-red color with a tan head. The aroma is toffee, lightly tart cherries and oak. Very inviting. The flavor is tart cherries, oak and vanilla. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice, lightly sour beer that is very drinkable.

Clear brown brew topped by a tan head. Gusher of a brew; good head size; great retention and nice lacing.

Sharp, vinegar and oak aroma, laced with tannins and grape. A touch of caramel.

Tart flavor, but not overly so, really allowing the malt flavors to come through. Dark fruit and dark bread, oak and tannins, red grapes, and grainy brown sugar peeking through on the finish.

Very fizzy mouthfeel; slick and very drinkable. Nice sour qualities, puckering (especially on the finish), but very subdued.

This is a very nice Oud Bruin, bringing a lot of flavor to the table without being overwhelmingly tart.

A: dark cherry to coffee brown, thin but bubbly head, big chunks of yeast floaters.

S: sweet and sour, tangy even, raisins.

T: musty cider, crab apples and sour grapes, blue cheese, oak shines through as a warming red wine, finish is bitter roasted coffee.

M: light and crisp, warm bitter finish.

O: reminds me a lot of Orval, which I love, light bodied but complex and surprisingly strong for an 8%er

Served from bottle into a Duck-Rabbit stemmed snifter. Poured a massively dark brown (basically black) with a minimal light tan head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, tart cherry, acetic acid, and tart. The flavor was of sweet malt, tart cherry, caramel, wood, and subtle sour. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. This brew really threw me off as it smelled as if it would be much more sour/tart than it actually was. This one did have the tart/sour aspect going on, but it was not the dominant flavor in it at all. The flavors that were present really did a nice job of working together and enhancing one another. Just wish there would have been a little bit of the acetic acid present that I picked up on in the aroma. Defintely worth trying if you get the opportunity.

A tart but inviting beer, Cuvee Freddy pours a deep burgundy or mahogany color, leaving a fine ring of tan foam behind. The nose is sour with a whiff of vanilla, likely due to the aging in oak barrels. In short, this Flanders Oud Bruin is bold and full-bodied; cherry tartness and the aforementioned woody character are apparent in each and every mouthful.

Its drinkability is enhanced by the softening of the sour flavor in the drying finish. Let it linger on your tongue and you'll also notice hints of leather and dark skinned fruit. Overall, this is an aggressive and slightly acidic beer that serves as a noteworthy example of its style.

Appearance – Pours an almost opaque color into a generic tulip. Slight red can be shown around the edges but overall, this sucker is practically impenetrable by light. Less than a finger of very quickly dissipating head is achieved with a decent pour, that leaves little lacing.

Smell – Acidic characteristics up front, red wine vinegar, sour cherry, granny smith apples, slight vanilla (an odd yet pleasant aroma I was not expecting), and of course lots of funk.

Taste – Red wine up front – the initial taste reminds me of consecration but not on the same level/caliber to be honest. Dark fruits such as cherries and plums, more sweet malts and oak come through midway, and at the end is just the hint of vanilla. The warmer this gets, the more the tart/sour cherries come through. However, not to be a downer or a negative nancy, this just isn’t on par with what I was expecting. I was hoping it to be a bit more mouth puckering and what not. Perhaps one with age...

Mouthfeel – Low (too low in my opinion) carbonation, medium bodied.

Overall – A good flanders, and one I’d honestly pick up in the future to see what age would do to it. I’m in the process of trying to find RR replacements now that I’m back in IL, and this one may have to do for a Consecration Also wish there was a bit more carbonation.

This is Zymatore Edtion 2012 Batch 3, aged on Ransom Spirits Whisky, Pinot Noir and Late Harvest Zinfandel Barrels. Alvino sour aged on red grapes blended with Mano Negra (Belgian Stout). Blended and barrel aged. Barrel Numbers 12, 147, 149 and 150, Filled 3/5/12, emptied 10/7/13. Poured from a 750 ml bomber into a Founders Snifter at around 50F.

A: Basically a still beer, no carb other than the slightest cap which formed from nucleation after the pour. I Poured it aggressively. Dark Dark Dark red, basically black. Not turbid, pretty clear.

N: Tart red cherries, vinous grapes, a bit of lacto. I dont get any Belgian Owl Whisky barrel, but maybe a bit of Pinot Noir Oak. I don't get much funk or must, but there's a certain organic earthiness to the fragrance. Pleasant.

T: Big tart cherries are the dominant notes. It hits you with aggressive lambic lacto tartness, which you really get on the sides of your tongue, but transitions to the stout like oaky, very slightly smoky maltiness on the finish. Very interesting hybrid flavor profile. It's totally well integrated but you can pick out the two blended components on the front and back of eack sip.

MF: More wine-like than ale-like due to the almost total lack of carbonation. You have the tartness, which commands your palate and then puckers it a bit, without any real effervescence to cleanse. Medium bodied, with nice coating, but I could go with slightly more carbonation.

O: This is definitely a quality beer, and quite unique in approach. I can imagine that there is a fair amount of batch to batch variation based on the aging and blending methodology. If you like Flemish Reds, Oud Bruins and have an open mind, I think you will appreciate this beer. I'm a bit underwhelmed by the complex barrel aging protocol, which I imagined would be more apparent; I guess it's overshadowed by the tartness. I would definitely buy it again, and I would love to see how this ages.

Bottle poured into a snifter. Dark brown color with a tan head, some lacing on the glass, no head retention. Slight oak on the aroma and taste, was expecting a little more for a year, Slight vinegar at the front, some sourness, slight tart cherries, not big flavors but really good, finishes dry and sour, alcohol not very noticeable for 8%, medium mouthfeel. The sourness was a little subdued, was hoping for more, but this is still very good.

An older vintage (2008?) shared with thepeter as a morning tick from his cellar. Tried this on draft on Borfets and since he had this vintage bottle in the cellar why not?

Redish purple in color. minimal short lasting head. Crazy nose. Fruty, musky and sour smelling. Awesome.

Very tart and complex. Sour cherries plums with dried fruits mixed in. This aged very well. One of the best examples of this style. Not to much vinegar, actually quite balanced.

Much better than the fresh draft verision. Great stuff and the 3-4 years in thepeter's cellar did great things to this beer.

Bottle: Poured a deep cloudy burgundy color ale with a medium size foamy head with average retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of sour and tart notes mix in with light sweet notes and some sherry. Taste is also a nice mix between some tart notes which are well balanced with some notes of sherry and port with a subtle vinous character. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very nice and not too one-dimensional on the sour side of things.

Poured from a big bottle into stemless wine glasses x 2 with a moderate hand. Top popped with vigor - excellent. No date on the bottle, but this has been in the cellar for probably 3-6 months.

A: Wow, this is almost black. Dark, dark red. Huge rocky caramel-colored head, about 3 fingers worth. Impressive. Fairly large chunks of sediment - I think I was a bit aggressive with the pour. Looks like pieces of the barrel, actually.

S: Sourness, stone fruit, cherry. Some sweetness. Smells like a flemish. Pretty pumped.

T: Hmmm. Immediately tart, slightly akin to cherry juice, which I'm enjoying; but there is an abrupt transition to a barrel-aged, oaky, round, sweetness with bourbon overtones. Mostly sweet on the finish with a bit of unexpected bitterness and alcohol burn. Very late presence of chocolate. I'm reading back over that description and it sounds interesting, but don't think it's working well. The sour element is very transient and essentially disappears. Ends up being a bit cloying, to be frank.

M: Moderate carbonation. The body is a bit thin for the taste profile. It's okay - I don't think it adds to the beer, but doesn't really detract, either.

O: This ended up being a bit peculiar. I'm missing the sour/tart element that I really enjoy in both Flemish Red and Oud Bruin styles. Starts off very nicely, but is overwhelmed by the barrel characteristics and finishes like a darker, sweeter style. That being said, I don't recall any beer I've had in recent memory with similar qualities. Certainly interesting. I could see people really liking this - Try it for yourself!

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Dark oxidized purple color out of the bottle, hits nearly black but more of a dark inky purple color. Tan head which makes about two fingers but doesn't last, with some nice rising thin tan colored accented carbonation on the sides to populate a thin collar. Collar does eventually vanish while drinking quite quickly.

Nose is mildly sweet smelling but with a tinge of soft sourness and real nice juicy hints of plum and grape. Wet like raisin sensing a bit but not much oak character going on here.

Noticeably tart, but also incredibly wet bodied. Strange crazy finish with a sharp wine must sourness of cheap grapes. Very light bodied with a salty tinge and highly seltzery fizz carbonation. Aftertaste is nearly non existent with lots drying tannic qualities which don't help the palate. Some of the fruit character hinted on the nose particularly of plum and grape does come out but feels spoiled.

Always wanted to give this one a shot, and really love Flanders beers but even this one from the area really does not do it for me.

Bottle purchased at Oliver's in Albany, NY.

This one pours a slightly fizzy, moderately dark brown, with a very small head, and no lacing.

Smells like red wine, vinegar, cherries, oak, and lactic acid.

This is a little bit too vinegary to be entirely enjoyable for me. The vinegar dominates, with sour cherries, some sweet malt, and lactic acid. There's a little bit of oak, but not much barrel.

This is medium bodied, with a very tart and biting mouthfeel.

This was certainly interesting but had a few flaws.

Very dark brown color topped with a moderate frothy tan head. Fruity balsamic-like aroma...sherry, cherries, grapes, blackberries, and raisins. Just a bit of chocolate, but otherwise not much from the malt. Increasing dry oaky notes as it warms. Big time tart fruity flavor, very silky, and delightfully sweet and sour. Black cherries, berries, oak barrel, and a little red wine. Very soft, "floaty" mouthfeel with a solid lingering tartness, finishing dry. Sticks to the teeth. Excellent.

A wonderful Belgian Flanders sour ale. I wish I had the larger portion of the bottle I shared. Pours a lovely dark burgundy color, minimal head. Cherry notes and a slightly woody/barrel quality in the aroma and flavor. Slightly tart and appropriately lactic finish accentuated by the carbonation. Very nice, and don't be afraid of the yeast sediment in the dregs if you're into that sort of thing.

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Bottlecap says JUN2018

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a 1/2 inch dark tan head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a patch of wispy surface foam. Not-so-resilient lacing leaves a thin ring behind.

S- Powerful aroma of dark fruit, mainly black cherry, oak and lactic acid. Very musty. There's a unique medicinal aroma mixed in with everything that I'm not familiar with. Could be the yeast combined with the oak.

T- The flavor is much more controlled with a good balance of dark fruit, tartness and a bit of oak. Tastes like a Flanders Red on steroids which I guess is what a Flanders Oud Bruin is supposed to be. There's a decent amount of malt to balance but the sourness really catches up to you after a while

M- Very dry with a heavy pucker. Medium-low carbonation with a full body.

O- Intensely sour, but luckily there's enough fruit and malt to keep it within the bounds of drinkability.

Bottle at Thirsty Monk, Asheville, NC

A: The beer is nearly jet black in color - traces of amber are visible near the edge of the glass when it is held up to the light. It poured with a thin ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderately strong aromas of sour dark fruits are present in the nose.
T: The beer has very sour and tart flavors of dark fruits - black cherries seem to stand out in particular. Hints of chocolate and roasted malts are also noticeable.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very tart on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes more like a sour and tart version of a Belgian Strong Dark Ale compared to a Flanders Oud Bruin but is very complex and interesting.

Purchased in order to use the dreggs to inoculate a saison homebrew that I am souring. Poured a very deep, dark burgundy. The aroma is similar to a red wine, light oak, this has a pleasant tartness, mouth puckering but not obscenely sour, a fizzy effervescence, that finishes with a smoky, charcoal, reminiscent of hickory smoke

Not a bad sour, not allagash coolship by any means but pretty good while I am away from Maine

Appears a deep dense, mahogany with small off white cap with spotty bits of lacing around the glass.
Smell is of red wine, vanilla, tart bits of apple, berries, and funk.
Taste is of the aromas with strawberries and funky wine.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with a tad bit of tartness pulling through.
Really nice stuff. Wish I had more.

Pours a dark brown with amber hues, little to no head; subtle lacing. Pretty darn still almost like wine.

Aromas of sourness, oak, vinegar, earth and tobacco. No hop of yeast aromas.

The tastes begin with tons of red vinous grapes followed by oak, earthiness, tart cherry, vinegar and a light stone fruitiness in the back end. No hops or yeast flavors.

Mouthfeel is super thin and light, like a light-to-medium bodied pinot noir or granache wine. Low carbonation; pretty much still.

Overall this was a very interesting beer and the most wine influenced beer I have ever sampled. I wish I got more of the base beer here but I enjoyed how the sour beer flavors worked with the wine barrel aging. Would have liked more body/carbonation but the wine mouthfeel is appropriate I guess for a red vinous tasting beer.

Small bottle poured into a tulip.

Dark brown, maybe with a hint of red, not much head present.
Cherries, toasted malts, some sour notes, fairly sweet aroma.
Fairly sweet, some funky blue cheese like notes, hints of cherries but not much sourness. Medium body with a light carbonation.

A pretty solid beer. I wish I got more cherry flavor and a bit more tartness. That said it has some nice funky notes. I'm glad I tried this one and wouldn't mind revisiting it in the future.

This stuff pours a murky brown little head but you can see bubbles present...smells of oak and something funky.... the first sip is mouthwatering unexpectedly really fruity and sour... superb sour flemish ale.... Lovely acidic tarness with lots of cherry tones... not overly sour but well balaced with oak and aCIdity... wow superb!!!! It is sour though dont get me wrong prob most sour flanders ive tried...Great Stuff!!!

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into a stemless snifter. Smells like I combined my trip to Cantillon with that to Neuhaus. Tastes like a great young gueze with a drop of old Rasputin. Great find for $5 at new beer distributors in NYC.
