I had this on-tap at Churchkey, poured into a snifter.

Appearance: Pours a mostly clear reddish amber color with a mild amount of off white head that goes away quickly.

Smell: Fruity vinegar with some wine barrel and mild, sweet malt.

Taste: Very wine like. Sour vinegar with some woody barrel notes. There is a mild caramel like flavor in the background. The finish is sour and full of grapes.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a mild amount of carbonation and a buttery finish.

Overall: Honestly I thought this beer was a bit boring. I'm also not convinced it is listed under the correct category. Quite smooth, but I don't think I'll have another.

On tap at Churchkey. Served in a mini snifter.

Pours a ruby copper color with a very thin off-white head. Not much lacing. Nose is slightly sour and has a bit of oak with a bit of an herbal character, maybe juniper or light sage. The flavor is mildly sour with light pit fruits and a semi-dry finish. Pretty good, but I prefer the variations.

First had: on tap at Blind Tiger Ale House, NYC, NY

Served in a tulip glass, this beer had a beautiful dark brown color with ruby highlights, a thin off-white head that retained as a small layer of delicate bubbles. Tart aroma, some spice and Belgian yeast. Nice sourness in the taste, but not so mouth-puckering that you can't enjoy a full glass or even two: notes of dried apricot, sour apple, and dark berries, acetic acid, with hints of spice and an earthy quality. Meduim-bodied and moderately drinkable for the style.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

A: The pour is a murky amber color with almost no head at all.

S: Quite the nose on this...it's very musty with tons of celery and chile pepper. There's also a lot of garbage, hot garbage, at that. Quite gross, really. It's not all that sour, but does have some lemon and grass.

T: Starts off with a stale cereal flavor, maybe old cheerios. Despite the awful aroma, the flavor is quite bland and a bit watery. Some mild malt and oak with more of the celery and vegetable character. A very light tartness.

M: Maybe medium in body with low carbonation.

O: Just an awful aroma. Not a good flavor, either.

On tap at Max's during their annual Belgian fest.

The beer pours a reddish dark amber color with minimal head retention and pretty much no lacing. To be honest, the beer looks as if it's completely flat, though once I tasted it, that proved not to be the case. On the nose I get wine and sour, with the sour component clearly dominating. The flavor profile replicates the nose, with the beer showing light carbonation. There is considerable flavor in this medium bodied beer, and I suppose if you are a sour lover you will be happy with this one. Alchol is well integrated into the flavor profile, and the beer is not at all boozy (which is no surprise given the abv.).

Mehhhh... this just isn't working for me. The beer is too one dimensional, and that one dimension is largely sour. I guess it's OK, but at least for me, there just isn't enough else going on.

Poured from the tap a dark reddish brown with very little head. Smell is sourness oak some funky earth and a bit of sweet malt. Taste was sour red cherries and oak with green apples and a sweet dry finish, wow. Mouthfeel was clean and dry but definately not light. Overall more than I expected in terms of taste, very nice beer that will leave an impression for some time on my palate.

Had on tap at Max's Taphouse in Baltimore for Belgian Beer Fest.
This probably should be under the "Wild Ale" category, as it really isn't a Belgian Dark Ale.

Poured a clear dark mahogany color with slight reddish highlights. Very little head, but what did form was bleached white and a thin ring.

Smell was everything you'd expect from a wild ale. Super tart, lactic sour from all the crazy wild yeasts. Some sembalance of a toffee-ish backbone that was stripped to the bone by the wild yeasts. Sour fruits come to mind.

Taste meshed well with the aroma. VERY sour! This beer has that awesome puckering quality that makes you involuntarily salivate. There is a slight fruity sweet backbone with lactic and acetic sourness predominating. Notes of sour raspberries and tart apple peel show up as well. Very refreshing but also very sour.

Mouthfeel is light and somewhat thin as you would expect in extremely sour beers. Finish is absolutely bone-dry!

Drinkability is excellent as I could easily drink a few of these and not get tired of it. Adequate malt backbone keeps it from charring you taste buds.

On tap at The Lion's Pride.
Came to the table a slightly hazy brown with a thin tan head that slowly dissipates to a ring. Smells of oak, vanilla, caramel, and ethanol with a hint of tart. The flavor is not what I expected based on the nose with a heavy tart cherry and lemon thing with caramel edges going on. Light body with a moderate level of carbonation and a tart almost chalky mouthfeel. This was not my favorite is all tart and a little funk with no balance.

Had this on tap at Pizza Pardisco in D.C. over the weekend. Served into a snifter:

A - A dark brown with a mahegony, redish hues that are only so slight. No head or sign of carbonation.

S - Tart fruit, bits of cherries and some raspberry funk. Really picking up on the acidity. Bit of earth and oak.

T - Tart cherries and oak here. Crisp granny smith apples and cider flavors. Again, signs of tart funk and acidity.

M - Crisp and refreshing. Smooth with a semi dry finish.

D - Pretty easy to drink. I had to sit there and enjoy it and force myself to take notes instead of just downing it. I'd gladly drink this again, but not for the price ($10 a snifter).

Wild Undressed Monbazillac served at Churchkey (DC) in a snifter shaped glass - 200th review

A - Beer was served with small bubbly rimmed edge; some carbonation was present; dark opaque brown body; syrupy consistency (had legs)

S - Strong sour grapefruit nose; Brut champagne sourness; semi-floral notes hidden behind sour nose; sour yeast

T - Flat champagne Brut taste; not much punch and kind of light on non-sour flavors; clean; sour-tart vinegar taste; bitter and sour flavor in the middle of the palette

M - My tongue is still feeling the sourness, hours after drinking; thin and flat body; flavors are quick and clean on the tongue, leaving a dry, crisp feel like a Brut

D - I liked this drink; it really challenges your taste buds and makes for an interesting and memorable drink; I would love to have another; great stuff, nice and sour

On tap at Tørst.

Pours a pinkish-tinged deep red. Head is off-white slightly, small bubbles that dissipate to nothing. Nice colour, otherwise meh.

Smells tart and spicy. Plenty of red vinous notes with malt vinegar, black pepper and sour cherry. In the Belgian style of sours, very intriguing and refreshing too.

Taste is tart from start to finish. More vinous notes and plenty of sour cherry. Gets dry, peppery spice midway and then crisp sour vinegar notes late on the palate. Manages to finish with a sweetness, like fruit-infused vinegar. Makes it very drinkable and pleasant overall.

A bit puckering, but smooth enough late. OK body.

Very nice sour ale. Couple of organic, almost mulchy notes on there but mostly just crisp yet complex flavour bomb.
