(Note about availability: I didn't research this specifically; am guessing off having found it once and it not being listed on the current Alvinne lineup.) Bought 2012 at the brewery with Jan 2015 by-date on the cap, tasted 2/22/13 in a tulip glass, initially a bit too cold (perhaps low-40s F). In the glass, it was surprisingly even more opaque than in the bottle, past deep cherry color into mahogany. Two inches of almost custard-colored foam settled to a scrim but left a nice coating on the glass throughout (better part of hour to the bottom). Serious legs. Caramel, toast, scotch-like booziness, coffee, cherry, apricot aromas. Sip, slurp: Chocolate milkshake, anyone? An artisanal one with some toffee, chicory and black pepper. Bitterness comes in the form of burnt toast rather than floral hop notes. As it went on and warmed up, the well-masked alcohol feel seemed to catch up to, then numb, my palate. Fork-and-knife level of chewiness, enlivened with a burst of carbonation but in mid-sip rather than the finish, leaving a serious mouth coating -- to the point where I found myself taking a few sips of water to rinse.
