Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Tulip.

Appearance: Hazy straw yellow with sticky, clingy white head and lace.

Smell: Orange, grapefruit, pear, tropical notes, as well as some spiciness and breadiness.

Taste: Bready backbone with layers of orange, grapefruit and pear. A lot more spiciness than in the aroma along with a titch of clove. Light bitterness with lingering citrus.

Feel: Moderately high carbonation over a relatively light body for the 6.4% abv. Very dry finish. Crisp and refreshing.

Overall: I often have mixed feelings about Belgian IPAs as sometimes the yeast and hops don't seem to get along. I found this beer to be very well integrated and balanced and it was hard to tell what flavors were imparted by the hops vs. the yeast. This is a massive win for the style. However, the taste is slightly muted vs. some other examples, so I guess that was the trade off. Regardless, I really liked it.

Nose: Light biscuit, citrus, some vanilla and a hint of banana.
Pours hazy stray under a 2” moussey, very creamy white foam cap that produces very clingy lace.
The palate starts with light fruit such as pear and then the malt shows up foreshadowing a big hop finish.
Medium body. The above average carbonation is a little harsh for the style.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Label says best by 10/15/14.

Appearance: Pours a bright and hazy yellowish golden orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Solid two fingers of white head with decent retention. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty, fruity, and spicy Belgian style IPA aroma with big hints of citrus fruit and spice. Belgian yeast with some hints of clove, pepper, and funk. Huge aroma of tropical fruits with hints of mango juice, grapefruit, orange, lemon zest, pineapple, apricot, and melon. Also some big hints of green apples and pear. Also some subtle earthy hops. Pale malt with hints of grains, wheat, straw, and cracker. A very nice juicy aroma.

Taste: Like the smell, a very fruity, yeasty, and spicy Belgian IPA taste with a big presence of citrus fruit and spice. Upfront Belgian yeast with some notes of funk, clove, and pepper. Big juicy taste of tropical fruits with notes of mango, lemon zest, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, apricot, and melon. Also a big taste of green apple and pear along with slight banana. Subtle notes of earthy and piney hops. Soft malt presence with notes of grains, straw, wheat, and cracker. A very nice taste that is fairly tart, sweet, and drying.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation. Very juicy and fairly spritzy. Finishes dry.

Overall: A very good take on a Belgian style IPA. Good mix of fruit esters and spice with a citrus presence that almost tastes like straight mango juice.

Enjoy by date of 10/15/14

Appearance - Pours hazy and pale yellow with an off-white, near two-finger head. Fair retention, leading thin layer of suds with clumpy patches and a thick ring around the edge of the glass. Spotty lacing with good stick.

Smell - Vague Belgian aroma along with some orange and lemon peel

Taste - Hmmm. Touches on some citrus hop character as well as a vague Belgian yeast flavor, but it's all pretty well muted. Opens a bit more on the citrus side as it warms, but still lacks the promise of the label, as Belgian notes are still hard to pull from the profile.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with fair carbonation. Smooth and easy to drink. Probably the best aspect of this beer.

Overall - I can't help but be disappointed by this one. Pretty weak flavor; much less flavor than the Paulaner Hefe I had before this. Frankly, when your IPA is getting outflavored by a hefeweizen, you might wanna go back to the drawing board.

Bomber served cold. Best before 10/15/2014.

Foray is a pale hazy yellow color with thin white head. It's doesn't have good retention or lacing.

Aroma is full of tropical fruit, both from hops and the Belgian yeast. Apricot, peach, mango, and banana.

Flavor is a little less fruity and bit more malty than expected. Pale malt, maybe pilsner, with a bit of hop bitterness, and a little tart and funky from the yeast.

Mouthfeel is light in body and nicely carbonated. It's balanced and enjoyable on a warm summer night.

Overall a good beer but not bitter enough or hoppy enough to really be a Belgian IPA.

The Foray is probably one of the best Belgian style IPAs that I've had. The beer poured a slight hazy yellow with floaties and white head that left a spotty lace. The scent carried Belgian yeast and sugar mixed with pine like hops. The taste followed suite....started like a white Belgian then finished like a west coast ipa. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall this was a good ipa and worth a shot.
