Had on-tap at Boneshaker in Rocklin, CA
Appearance - Served in a 10oz glass, the brew is clear and a deep auburn in color. A small, light brown half finger head sits atop.
Smell -Brown sugar and molasses with big raisin fruitiness. Hints of caramelized banana and a bit of heat from the alcohol.
Taste - Follows the nose to an extent. More caramel and banana then what was hinted, but strong notes of raisin and rum are the predominant flavors here. Sweet with heat. Finishes with a touch of metallic twang.
Mouthfeel - Full in body with low carbonation. Sticky. Smooth, then a drying alcohol finish.
Overall - Not bad, in fact pretty good. A bit too 'dark fruit and sugary sweetness' for my liking, but that's what you get with a quad, and there wasn't too much to turn me off completely. Glad I tried it on tap, but the price on the bottle I saw at the store the next day frightened me off from buying it. I liked it; didn't like it that much!

Well, I thought The Stoic was excellent, so I hope Deschutes didn't fuck the beer up because everyone else didn't like it. 22 oz. black-waxed bottle split with my wife.
Pour is a dark enough red that I have to hold it up to the light to accurately ascertain its color. Carbonation reports in: low. Smells like a light wine with a side of quad sweetness. From the nose, hard to believe only 15% of this came out of wine barrels.
Not the Stoic redefines the word 'interesting'. First up is big dark fruits which I'm going to attribute to the 'pomegranate molasses' on the label - & what the hell is pomegranate molasses, anyways? Does syrup flow out of them trees, too? Or is it just syrup with fruit added? I love maple syrup. Especially on Belgian waffles. Belgian, yeah, speaking of which, the quad creeps in mid-palate but it's subtle, quiet. Wood, bit of bourbon, sweetness, topped off with a shart of brown sugar. Very full. Half a big bottle of this is enough.
Complex, original, & pretty tasty. Nonplussed. Good beer.
