22oz bomber poured into a snifter. Best after date of 4/22/15.

A- Pours a dark ruby color with some nice red hues along the sides of the glass. A fizzy half finger of off white head slowly fades.

S- The smell has a bit of both worlds; I get the acidic hint of cherries and grapes from the wine barrels, followed by a sweet oak aroma.

T- Smell carries over in the taste. Initially there is a bit of tartness from the wine barrels, with some banana and clove. Then comes the oak whiskey barrel taste, which each sip leaving a nice warming feeling.

M- Medium bodied, nicely carbonated, sweet but hot, nice sipper.

This is a very interesting beer, with both tart and oak boubon notes. I'll probably grab another to age.

Deep garnet red, almost black from the side. Aroma is fruity with apples, rum, raisins,
pear and caramel. Taste is outstanding, rivaling the Belgian quadsrupels. It definitely has persistent notes of red grapes from the wine barrels it was aged in to add to the richness. Although not as thick ar intense as a typical Trappist quad like Abt 12, I actually prefer this version of the style. The complex fruit and sweetness tantalize the palate instead of overpowering it. If it wasn't such a high ABV, I could easily drink a few of these.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet glass. Label says best after 04/22/15.

Appearance: Pours a dark and hazy brownish amber with a moderate amount of bubbles. Small finger of off white head that quickly fades away. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A sweet, fruity, and fairly boozy Quad style aroma with big hints of dark fruit and whiskey. Upfront barrel presence with nicely boozy hints of rye whiskey, oak, wood, and wine like hints of cherries. Belgian yeast with hints of pepper and clove spicing. Toasted malts with hints of biscuit, caramel, toffee, and toast. Huge scent of dark fruit with hints of raisin, prune, fig, dates, and grapes. Also some fruit hints of banana, apple, and pear. Sweet hints of molasses. A very good aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a fruity, sweet, and boozy twist on a Belgian Quad with big notes of dark fruit and whiskey. Big barrel presence with upfront notes of rye whiskey, oak, wood, and somewhat tart wine notes of cherries. Belgian yeast with some spice notes of clove and pepper. Sweet notes of molasses and candied sugar. Toasted malt with notes of caramel, toffee, biscuit, and toasted bread. Dried fruit notes of bananas, apple, and pear. Big dark fruit presence with notes of prune, raisin, grape, fig, and dates. Nicely fruity and boozy with a slight acidic edge. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Fairly chewy and slick. Sweet but not overly cloying. Some alcohol is felt as expected but its not overly hot.

Overall: A really good twist on the Belgian Quad style. The rye whiskey and wine barrels add a nice kick to a very good dark fruit rich base.

Had on-tap at Boneshaker in Rocklin, CA

Appearance - Served in a 10oz glass, the brew is clear and a deep auburn in color. A small, light brown half finger head sits atop.

Smell -Brown sugar and molasses with big raisin fruitiness. Hints of caramelized banana and a bit of heat from the alcohol.

Taste - Follows the nose to an extent. More caramel and banana then what was hinted, but strong notes of raisin and rum are the predominant flavors here. Sweet with heat. Finishes with a touch of metallic twang.

Mouthfeel - Full in body with low carbonation. Sticky. Smooth, then a drying alcohol finish.

Overall - Not bad, in fact pretty good. A bit too 'dark fruit and sugary sweetness' for my liking, but that's what you get with a quad, and there wasn't too much to turn me off completely. Glad I tried it on tap, but the price on the bottle I saw at the store the next day frightened me off from buying it. I liked it; didn't like it that much!
