On tap at Hats Off to Homebrewers, KCMO 2012 Deschutes Base Camp festivities. Awesome time had by all. You could get a long pour of either Horseridge or Double Wide IPA. I chose Horseridge, I've drank gallons of double wide. Poured into a Deschutes snifter

Appearance - Pours a nice copper color with a sizable one and a half finger head that recedes slowly and leaves outstanding lacing. Looks like someone smeared glue inside my glass.

Smell - Floral and herbal notes are the main smells here. There is a background of malts with fruity notes as well. Quite the complex nose.

Taste - Excellent tasting brew. Malts make their presence known on the palate, to be taken over by the bittersweet fruits and floral hops.

Mouthfeel - Finishes nice and bitter, ultra crisp. Really enjoyed the finish on this beer.

Overall - Another great product from Deschutes. Bravely done. I love how they can push the envelope and still produce great tasting beers at reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

On tap at the Bend Pub on 6.21.12.

I had this one a while ago, but somehow missed the review. Here is another shot at it.

A - Served a dark, murky orange with a small tan head that is gone quickly.

S - Very malt forward and some dark ripe citrus tones.

T - Same as the nose. Malty and over-ripe citrus. Nothing special.

D - Good carbonation and a heavier body.

O - Alright, heavier then I was looking for and I think somebody forgot the hops in this IPA.

On tap served in a 4oz sampling glass

A - Clear golden with a one finger khaki head a moderate head retention and minimal lacing

S - Very nice floral and grapefruit citrus hop bouquet. Minor roasted malt and wheat notes as well.

T - Follows the smell, the hops dominate and are well highlighted with a great overall balance. Nice sweetness and bitterness to boot!

O - My favorite IPA at Deschutes (they had 5 at the time of my visit!) and my 3rd favorite after the Abyss and Red Chair. I would get this anytime, a great IPA.

On tap @ the Deschutes Brewery & Public House (Bend, OR) on 9/1/11. Served in a 10 oz footed Pilsner glass.

Pours a clear copper, with a ½ finger cap of frothy bright-white head. This stays robust, leaving back a nice smattering of lace down the sides of the glass. The aroma smells freshly floral (and a little herbal), with a sweet combo of fruit and crisp malt in the nose. A touch of leafy bitterness gives this a touch of an edge underneath.

The malts here control this with a smooth, yet still crisp, sweetness up front, and blends in with herbal citrus character (both sweet fruit and bit more bitter as well). One more flush of sugary sweetness comes out across the back, before the hops return to finish this dry with light lingering notes of pith and spice. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm creamy sharpness the whole way through, with the flavors here moving very easily for a 6% IPA.

The use of the Crystal malt almost makes this a little too sweet at times (especially when paired up with the tropical fruit from the hops) but then the wheat kicks in to give this a balancing crispness on the palate that works with the more bitter citrus that is present and actually makes this quite refreshing at times. This didn’t quite blow me away but I did appreciate the craft that went into this one.

Enjoyed on tap, poured into a half pint. Usually only available at the Bend brewpub, this keg made the trip to Arizona for Hopageddon, Papago’s 10th anniversary party. It’s brewed with Horizon, Cascade and Crystal hops, two types of crystal malt, and two types of wheat.

Honey-orange, with very slight haze. One finger of dense tan head descends after a long while, leaving a thick, furry top layer and some spots of lace.

Sweet, tropical nose. Mango, apricot, orange peel, grass. Maybe some burnt sugar in the background, but it’s very hop-forward. A smooth, tropical blend.

The tropical notes are better blended in the flavor, mixing with honey and crackers. Lots of mango, hints of grass. The finish is dry as a desert, moderately bitter and crackery.

Medium body with nice heft. Light, prickly carb. Dry and nicely bitter, which it should be at 75 IBUs.

Very drinkable. Though it’s fairly sweet mid-palate, the dry finish leads you right into the next sip. Glad I got the chance to try it.

Ok on cask at the Deschutes Brewpub in Bend Oregon.
What an excellent looking IPA..deep orange , very hazy amazing creamy cask conditioned head..marvelous lacing.
Very hoppy/spicy aroma..exceptionally fresh.
The cask conditioning seems to lessen the bitterness and allow the malts some room to raom making a very nicelly balanced beer.
Exceptional on the palate..silky smooth and very creamy.
What a drinkable ale..I could drink these all night ..wonderful.
