I poured this from a 12oz bottle into a Bass pint glass. Best by date of 10/24/09. A quick pour provided a rocky inch thick cream colored head that slowly receded into a coating film on top of a orange hued gold. The glass is studded with bubbles from the carbonation which is perfect for what I was looking for as I opened this beer, something cool, fizzy and refreshing.
The nose is mildly hop driven with light notes of cut grass, sweet pea and lemon curd. There seems to be a lack of depth on the nose but this is APA for christ's sake. Whadda ya want?
The flavors here are nice, but far from extreme or overpowering, perfect for a 6 pack on a warm summer day which it is while I'm reviewing this. I like the mild grapefruit tones that intermingle with the British digestive biscuit flavors from the malt. This almost reminds me of a nice true English Bitter with its snappy perfect balance between malt and hops.
The carbonation mentioned before comes back up here. I don't find it overpowering but I would imagine some would. It works for me on a hot day like today. The dry malt character is a nice touch and it keeps this beer from getting cloying even after your 4-5 deep.
I could honestly drink this all day and not get tired of it. Plus the 5% alcohol keeps the mind clear and willing to keep downing these tasty numbers. This was one of those "just what I was looking for beers" perfect for the situation at hand. Next to Firestone Walker's Pale 31 this is my new go-to 6pk beer this Summer!
