Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a standard pint glass. Appears a deep amber color with hints of orange throughout. The head is off-white, very fluffy and sticks around for a while, leaving lacing as it dissipates.

The nose is caramel, bread, pine and citrus. There is a good balance here, but the malts are slightly forward for me. This is also a little subdued on the aroma. The taste is very balanced, with lots of good maltiness in the middle (again the caramel and breadiness). The front and back-end are balanced out nicely with the citrus and pine. The pine is more present in the finish than the citrus, but all around, fairly decent.

The mouthfeel is just where it should be: medium bodied, average levels of carbonation. Overall, this is a very good pale ale. It is drinkable, refreshing, very well balanced and keeps you coming back for more.

Color- medium straw. Thick medium head.

Aroma- sweet and mellow with citrus hints of sweet malt.

Taste- Like a hoppy lager. Light, good for after mowing the lawn. Starts with a tinge of lager then gets mildly hoppy and finishes with a pleasant mild hoppiness. Maybe my bottle was not fresh?

Poured from 355 ml bottle into a Liefmans Goudenband glass (my preferred all purpose beer tasting glass). Tasted 7/7/2013.

On-tap at Elmer's in northeast Portland, 3 June 2014.

Pours clear medium orange. Bright and vibrant. One finger of off-white head, excellent retention, leaves gorgeous terraces of lacing on the glass as I drink it.

Smell is clean and brightly hopped. In the new world of mega-dry-hopped pale ales, this stands out for its balance - it's just really well put together. Light piney hops, just a tingle. Excellent.

Taste is clean and crisp. Spicy hop bite, tingly but not overly bitter, though it leans that way in the finish, sort of citrus rind-y.

Feel is outstanding. Medium-light body, tingly prickly carbonation, lasting medium-long to allow the hops to come out and play for a bit.

An excellent, really well-balanced APA. There's a reason this one's a classic. Clean, refreshing, and delicious.
