Obsidian comes out completely black with great tan head that is very well retained.
Smell is slightly tame, with dark roasted malts, vanilla and breadyness. Has a little bit of a chocolate chip cookie character to it.
Flavors are bold, yet cohesive. Heavy on the dark chocolate - very roasty and somewhat sweet. There's also a touch of smokeyness. The finish is long and slightly bitter yet smooth.
The mouthfeel might be the least impressive characteristic of Obsidian - medium-bodied for a stout with fine carbonation and just slightly more carbonated than I would prefer.
This is a long-time favorite of mine and a stout that stacks up well next to many of the Imperial/Double stouts, despite coming in at a relatively low 6.4%. Very nice stout for any time of the year. Deschutes, you are truly great.
