Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Brooklyn tulip. Sent as an extra by Lokieman.

A: Pours a straight black with a huge beige head. Nice retention and great lacing.

S: Raw coffee, soapy yeast, piney hop, milk chocolate.

T: Slightly metallic roast, mild lactic coffee and chocolate, roast in the finish. Coffee and hop bitterness linger.

M: Creamy carbonation, relatively light-bodied.

O: Pretty good. A bit light-bodied, and the flavor's a bit light as well.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, best by date if 9/12/12. This pours a pitch black color with a massive Mocha colored head which has a long retention and leaves a lacing. The smells are of Mocha, dark chocolate, dark roasted malts, some hops, excellent. The feel is medium to thick. The taste is amazing, like a bitter mouthful of good espresso, dark chocolate, nice hop bite, this is the best stout which isn't an irs.

A- Poured from a bottle into my Pint glass. This brew is pitch black with a thin tan head and minimal lacing

S- The nose is not prominent it does however have a "piney" scent

T- Smoke right off the bat, an excellent stout flavor. Spicy chocolate and coffee notes. The aftertaste is a little aromatic but finishes clean.

M- Medium to heavy body but not too thick.

O- I would drink again if given to me, but I will stick with a Stout with a Higher ABV

Picked up a 6 pk of these for a cool $7-BB date of Sep 17, 2012.

A-Poured into a pint glass this beer is a heady beast. Extremely thick tan head with a pillow like appearance-reminds me of a root beer float. The head laces and has tremendous staying power. Black.

S-Tons of toasted malts hit you right away (chocolate, cookies, mild coffee). Surprising that the NW US hops (pine, citrus) come out even among all the toasted malt character in the aroma of this beer.

T-Stouty...heavy on the roasted malts (definitely chocolately and coffee like) leading into a long somewhat bitter finish. The hops are more easily picked up in the aroma than in the taste.

M-Moderate to high carbonation. Medium to heavy bodied with a rather thin end note-not creamy unless you get a gulp of head. Fairly bitter lingering finish. No alcohol detected until its in my belly.

D-Pretty damn good. The bitterness is just high enough to keep you wanting that next drink.

O-A wonderfully made stout with tons of flavor delivered at a great price. Deschutes has to be in my top 5 breweries in the US, they knock every dark beer they make out of the park.

12oz Bottle from City Beer Store San Francisco CA for 1.99 - thanks to j for this one

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an above average size frothy brown head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some really good lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, coffee

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, coffee, chocolate, and some faint dark fruits. There is also a little bit of a hop bitterness and some light smokey/burnt notes. It ends with a malty chocolatey aftertaste with a surprising amount of lingering hop bitterness.

Overall - One of the better stouts I've had so far and a must try for any fans of the style. I'd drink a ton of this stuff if it was available to me locally. Probably the best Deschutes beer I've had to date.

12 fl oz brown glass bottle served in a snifter, reviewed live:

A - Pours a jet black color with a thick, creamy chocolate colored head of 1.5 fingers. Retention is pretty good and the head leaves nice lacing as it recedes. Inviting.

S - Sweet cream, bold roasted barley and surprisingly spicy. Subtle coffee notes, though I don't find any chocolate even when I search. Moderate in strength.

T - A creamy open smooths the abrasive nature of the deep roasted malt. The malt is the main focus. Light plum and caramel bleed through the lightly bitter finish. Very, very well balanced. It's far from complex, but the quality of the ingredients speak volumes. Slightly boozy on the finish.

M - Strangely light and coarse, though it's got an awesome dry finish. I wish it were thicker and much more creamy. Probably the most glaring fault.

D - Another great offering from Deschutes. I don't think they can make a bad beer (or really an average one for that matter). High quality and incredibly approachable.
