Pours dark brown, almost black. A large mocha head left plenty of spidery lacing.

Smell is of dark coffee and tobacco.

Taste is similar to the smell. Plenty of dark roasted malt with coffee and tobacco notes.

Texture is stellar. A medium body with some chew. Some carbonation and a bite.

A very surprising great feeling from such a low abv. My favorite part of the beer. Flavors are big and bold. It's not an imperial, so I can't expect more complexity, but it's well done.

DOA

L: Deep black, red glints on the pour. Creamy brownish head and excellent lacing.

A: Roasted coffee, dark chocolate, charcoal, caramel biscuit, herbal hop. Very clean, crisp and rich aroma.

T/M: Firm bitterness upfront, big coffee/charcoal and dark chocolate, wheat tartness. The middle reveals some herbal hop caramel biscuit adding some richness to the roasted flavors. The mouthfeel is full and the finish has some lingering sweetness, but it is heavily out-wayed by the drying roasted flavors.

Overall, what a stout. Extremely complex and balanced, bringing flavor from many places. The wheat malt was genius, I would have never thought to put that in a stout, but it works beautifully with the charcoal roasted notes. A real winner, I cannot think of a better year-round offering available in my state.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a mug. Reviewed live.

A- Finger and a half creamy looking mocha head. Nice retention and wonderful lacing. Black color.

S- Coffee, chocolate and roasted malts. Wonderfully warm and inviting smell. Roasted notes and possibly toffee.

T- Roasted tastes and some darker malts and barley. This is a tasty brew with a bitter finish.

M- Surprisingly light body, but dry finish.

O- What can I say? Deschutes always treats me right.

Thanks to johnhenryconway for this brew.

A - Pours a black opaque color with a tan froth about 1" thick. A thick ring remains and the froth sticks to the glass like a melted marshmallow.

S - Coffee and roasted malts with some hints of nut in there as well. A nice roasted scent.

T - Slightly bitter malts roasted with a nutty finish.

M - Medium carbonation with a slightly bitter finish.

O - Not a bad stout. Would definitely have more.

Appearance: Deep dark black. 1 finger inch brown head. Excellent lacing.

Smell: Coffee, dark chocolate malts. Licorice, bourbon barrel.

Taste: Milk chocolate. Raisins. Charcoal. Cocoa malts. Strong northwestern bittering hops. Vanilla finish.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied heavy malt stout with good slow bitterness and drying finish.

Overall: The prototype for the Abyss. An absolutely phenomenal American stout. Probably the best in it's style. You can't beat it for $7.99 a sixer.
