Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass at around 45°F

Appearance: Almost as dark as brown can get. An amber hue at the bottom of the glass when put up to the light

Smell: Roasted oats, chocolate, coffee

Taste: Sweet milk chocolate upfront with roasted oats and malts throughout the finish

Mouthfeel: A little lighter than I prefer; Almost watery on the palate

Overall: This is my second offering from Deschutes since they have recently started distributing in my area. Hop Henge blew me away, this did not. Overrated and over hyped in my opinion. I really wanted to love it, but with Smuttynose, Founders, and Eddy Fitz being my regular go to's, that's too tall of an order. Don't get me wrong, It's a good porter with some great aspects for the style, but it's light with no real identity. If I'm on a remote island and can't find my top 3, but this is available, it'll do, but until then, I'm not seeking this out.

$4.50 bottle had at Brick Oven Bistro in Sandusky, Ohio after a Cedar Point trip... seriously, stop there after Cedar Point if you want pizza. Very good and reasonably priced. Poured into a snifter that was served to me.

I heard phenomenal things about this beer and knew I needed to try it... so I did. Easily a top three (maybe four) Porter for me... clearly up there with the "big boys." The taste is all over (in a VERY GOOD sense) with roast, char, chocolate, coffee, and a tinge of dark fruits. The feel is basically spot-on for the style. Medium sort of body which suits the style and ABV, and then a pretty prickly carbonation as well. An incredibly tasty, easy drinking porter that I wish could be had in Michigan. I like this more than Edmund Fitzgerald, to be honest. A must-try for fans of the style. Only fault I have with this beer is that it doesn't have a lasting head and lacing that I'd ideally like, but that's a super minor fault on a fabulous brew.

On tap at Billy's Long Bar in Albuqerque.

My beer arrives in a frosted pint glass but still manages to look good and retain a good head. A dark khaki-colored head, it dissipates somewhat quickly but I blame the glass. The body is dark brown and cloudy with trickles of carbonation.

A good chocolate aroma emanates from this brew. It's semi-sweet, malty, and has a dry aroma.

More chocolate on the tongue, but it's like baker's chocolate and slightly bitter. There's some sweetness like caramel, and a hint of some hops.

I'm impressed by the bitterness on this beer, and the way it combines with the dark bitter chocolate. This makes for a long bitterness at the finish and a dry stout-quality. Thickness and creaminess suggest this beer is nitroed, so that's impressive.

Overall, an excellent regular lineup beer. This is a nice reminder that a basic, traditional beer can still be splendid.

A - Pours cola like in appearance. Nice 1 1/2 finger tan head. Excellent retention and lacing

S - Light aroma. Sweet malts, lots of chocolate and even a slight bourbon on the finish if you use your imagination.

T - Not as sweet as the nose. Has a bitter finish with a hint of smoke. More coffee beans flavor present than chocolate but both are there. Smoke tends to linger on the finish

M - A medium body beer. Fizzy in the mouth and fairly smooth to drink. Just the tiniest hint of burn when the smoke flavor lingers

O - A solid porter. Nice flavor and I particularly enjoyed the smoky finish. Not a sessionable beer, but would be very enjoyable on a cool fall day or with some spicy bbq
