Mixed and matched a six pack for Deschutes for 15 bucks.
A - Got a full inch of mocha head, more than I expected with a deep black body not too deep as there is a lot of amber hues to the base.
S - Some chalky dark fruit notes, a bit of cocoa, and a level of obvious roast.
T - Smooth, very smooth. The roasted flavors mix with the hops and sweeter malts really make this one tasty brew. I get some dried fruit flavors as well.
M - Light to medium in body, somewhat chewy.
Overall it lives up to the hype it's a very tasty porter with some interesting fruity tones. Not sure if I would get it again though...

L: dark red ... almost purple-brown it's so dark, but also clear -- there might be floaties in it (it's hard for me to tell), but even if there are, the brew looks almost 100% clear; 1/3-inch of tan head that doesn't stick or lace much but keeps a thick collar and nice skin on top. nice looking and the clarity fits the style.
S: dark dried fruits and sweet ... fig/dates ... some musty oak and coffee; bourbon as it warms, vanilla ... more oak ... so much in this nose
T: chocolate ... really nice sweet darker malts with a nice smoky oak-wood to it on the back end, like a wood fire; get some bitter notes, and the IBUs aren't super high, so I'm wondering what's a hop bite here and what's burnt malt? very sweet at times despite the bitter, and the dark-malt notes bleed from chocolate/coffee into dates and almost licorice (but not quite ... not for me)
F: lighter midweight, super drinkable ... good carbonation
O: good brew but not one I'll seek out again -- not because it's bad, but because I can find a handful of very similar beers brewed closer to home. with that said, I love that I can get my hands on this beer almost whenever I want and for a good price. that's a major plus. so is the history of this brew, which dates back to the late 1980s when good beer was harder to find.
a friend I met at a brewery said Black Butte got him into beer, and I can see why. even my mom, who isn't much of a beer drinker, said "Ooo, that's sweet! I like that." definitely a standard of the style.
