Enjoyed from a 12 ounce bottle poured into a Brooklyn Brewery Tulip glass.

Look: Pour very dark, deep brown and black pour. 1 inch head, medium brown.

Smell: Needs some time to warm up for the whole bouquet to come out. Lite alcohol. Dark roasted malts with a medium dark chocolate smell along with hints of coffee and dark fruit.

Taste: needs warming but tastes the same as it smells. Very balanced, lots of different smells cone out.

Mouthfeel: average carbonation. Finishes very well. Very slick and smooth without being thin.

Overall a really good balanced porter. One of the best.

Appearance: Pours an almost totally opaque black, with 2 fingers of thick, foamy tan head. Nice retention & lacing.

Aroma: Roasty, chocolatey, sweet. Interesting it does NOT have that flinty/bloody smell I associate with many darker ales.

Taste: Solid, sweet arrival. Slight tartness with some bittering across mid-palate. Finish is roasty, sweet & lingering. Hints of liquorice.

Mouthfeel: Solidly mid-bodied; firm carbonation. (Less heavy and slick than Founders Porter; heavier than Breckenridge; perhaps comparable to Edmund Fitzgerald, maybe a touch heavier).

Overall: A very well-crafted, sweeter expression of a porter. I WILL be buying this again. Can't wait to do a head-to-head comparison with Edmund Fitzgerald.

$4.50 bottle had at Brick Oven Bistro in Sandusky, Ohio after a Cedar Point trip... seriously, stop there after Cedar Point if you want pizza. Very good and reasonably priced. Poured into a snifter that was served to me.

I heard phenomenal things about this beer and knew I needed to try it... so I did. Easily a top three (maybe four) Porter for me... clearly up there with the "big boys." The taste is all over (in a VERY GOOD sense) with roast, char, chocolate, coffee, and a tinge of dark fruits. The feel is basically spot-on for the style. Medium sort of body which suits the style and ABV, and then a pretty prickly carbonation as well. An incredibly tasty, easy drinking porter that I wish could be had in Michigan. I like this more than Edmund Fitzgerald, to be honest. A must-try for fans of the style. Only fault I have with this beer is that it doesn't have a lasting head and lacing that I'd ideally like, but that's a super minor fault on a fabulous brew.
