Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
Black Butte pours a molasses brown color with a visible ruby tint. It is thin enough for light to get through even in the center. A modes tan head forms initially and then slides down
The aroma gives this away as a classic porter. Dark chocolate and roasted malt notes really carry the nose, with a bit of smoke and coffee.
Each sip starts with a strong dark chocolate flavor. A strong malt profile is never relaly sweet, and a light coffee biterness grows over the course of the sip. There is a very mild hop presence that rounds out the slightly bitter finish.
This porter has crisp, full carbonation that lends to a light mouthfeel overall. The 5.2% ABV makes this an easy drinker.
Overall, this is a light, simple, drinkable example of a good style.

Appearance: Pours an almost totally opaque black, with 2 fingers of thick, foamy tan head. Nice retention & lacing.
Aroma: Roasty, chocolatey, sweet. Interesting it does NOT have that flinty/bloody smell I associate with many darker ales.
Taste: Solid, sweet arrival. Slight tartness with some bittering across mid-palate. Finish is roasty, sweet & lingering. Hints of liquorice.
Mouthfeel: Solidly mid-bodied; firm carbonation. (Less heavy and slick than Founders Porter; heavier than Breckenridge; perhaps comparable to Edmund Fitzgerald, maybe a touch heavier).
Overall: A very well-crafted, sweeter expression of a porter. I WILL be buying this again. Can't wait to do a head-to-head comparison with Edmund Fitzgerald.
