Picked this up in Boulder, CO. Not available here in Wichita.
Appearance: This beer poured a deep brown that let a little red light through when I held it up to a lamp. The light tan head rose up to two fingers and settled at an average rate. It was dense and a thin layer of foam linger on top of the brew for a long time. There was some light lacing.
Smell: Milk chocolate, cream, and a combination of sweet and roasted malts made up the bulk of the aroma. More of a rich and creamy smelling porter than heavily roasted and burnt. Some hops and light spices came through nicely as well.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and creamy smooth upfront, with a velvety carbonation forming on the back of the tongue and in the throat.
Taste: Cream, sweet chocolate, and sweet malts combined almost perfectly with dark roasted malt, a light charred flavor, and a touch of coffee. These developed nicely into the finish, where they were joined by a balancing hops bitterness. There wasn't a distinct flavor to the hops. A nice woody flavor and a touch of yeast arose in the aftertaste to mingle with the rest of the flavors.
This was one great beer. The flavor is classic porter.

A: Very dark black and a khaki head. This is a very dark beer. No wonder they give it its name.
S: Charred oats, bitter chocolate, malt.
T: Charred oats as said. Burnt chocolate, some hops, biscuit, toast, malt. Honestly I'm not too keen on the taste. It's a great beer no doubt, but I don't see what the hype is about.
M: Medium to thick-ish. Kind of a rough velvety feel.
O: A great brew, but like I said: the flavor on this one isn't my favorite. It's a bit too charred for me- as if the malts were a tad over done. I liked the beer overall, though.

I was excited that Deschutes started distribution in my area (KY) and so far have not been let down. I understand this to be a flagship brand and now I know why.
Lightly chilled 12 ounce bottle poured into a standard pint glass (as I would expect to be served in a pub in the UK)
A - Poured a deep black color with a firm, brownish long lasting head that slowly dissipated into a foam ring with decent lacing..
S - Deeply roasted grains with coffee and chocolate. Very little if any hop note.
T - Chocolate, coffee and roasted grains.
M - Medium body, moderate carbonation. Very nice almost sweet, but not sticky finish.
O - An excellent porter. I almost feel that in some ways Porters have developed to something closer to a "light: stout (which isn't a bad thing!). This is a outstanding complex and flavorful beer.
