I was deciding whether or not to brew a porter and this one was recommended 10x as one of the best brown porters in the world. I bought the sampler pack and this was the first one I tried.
A - Dark brown color maybe verging on black. Mostly clear but difficult to see from the color. Tan head with medium staying power (probably due to the wheat malt). Medium to light lacing.
S - Strong malty aroma with caramel/chocolate/roasty tones. The chocolate and malty aromas standout above the roasted character which is a nice change from most porters/stouts.
T - Holding true to the smells this beer is full of malty goodness that coats the palate with the chocolate and malt that I was expecting. The flavor is very similar to a southern brown but with more chocolate and roasted character and overall more complexity. The bitterness is there but not overpowering and allows the flavors to stay with you. Some roastiness helps to balance the sweetness and makes you wanting another drink.
M - Moderate to high mouth-feel. Light carbonation perfect for the style. The substantial body with a lower alcohol makes this brew a delicious finishing beer.
Overall, this is probably one of the best regular porters you can get. I would prefer a more "imperial" style porter but this one is definitely a strong contender for the top 50 beers with the way it balances complexity with simplicity and all of the flavors of a dark beer. If you know someone that doesn't like Guinness but you want them to try a dark beer this is a great one. Will try to make a clone and hope it comes out as good as this one is.

On tap at Billy's Long Bar in Albuqerque.
My beer arrives in a frosted pint glass but still manages to look good and retain a good head. A dark khaki-colored head, it dissipates somewhat quickly but I blame the glass. The body is dark brown and cloudy with trickles of carbonation.
A good chocolate aroma emanates from this brew. It's semi-sweet, malty, and has a dry aroma.
More chocolate on the tongue, but it's like baker's chocolate and slightly bitter. There's some sweetness like caramel, and a hint of some hops.
I'm impressed by the bitterness on this beer, and the way it combines with the dark bitter chocolate. This makes for a long bitterness at the finish and a dry stout-quality. Thickness and creaminess suggest this beer is nitroed, so that's impressive.
Overall, an excellent regular lineup beer. This is a nice reminder that a basic, traditional beer can still be splendid.

A - Pours cola like in appearance. Nice 1 1/2 finger tan head. Excellent retention and lacing
S - Light aroma. Sweet malts, lots of chocolate and even a slight bourbon on the finish if you use your imagination.
T - Not as sweet as the nose. Has a bitter finish with a hint of smoke. More coffee beans flavor present than chocolate but both are there. Smoke tends to linger on the finish
M - A medium body beer. Fizzy in the mouth and fairly smooth to drink. Just the tiniest hint of burn when the smoke flavor lingers
O - A solid porter. Nice flavor and I particularly enjoyed the smoky finish. Not a sessionable beer, but would be very enjoyable on a cool fall day or with some spicy bbq
