Bottle dated best before 6/15/13. Recently stocked at a local liquor store in Illinois, new to our state.

A -Pours out a dark brown with a creamy looking tan head. Head never fully recedes and always leaves a thin covering over my black beer. Some lovely lacing appears too.

S - Smells like roasty malts offering up other complex aromas of coffee, chocolate, smoke, and burnt sugar.

T - Taste is finely balanced between some of the sweetness from the malts with some bitter leafy hops. Very smooth and creamy with lots and lots of chocolate in the aftertaste. A touch of sourness rounds out some of the bittersweet flavors just adding to the overall drinkability of this beer. I could see this becoming a great session ale.

M - Mouthfeel is smooth and very creamy.

O - Overall an excellent porter and I've finally found a match for my standard for the style Edmund Fitzgerald that I first reviewed back in 2005. Would love to try them both side by side. Can't go wrong either way.

Appearance- Pours a dark brown with two fingers of creamy tan head.

Smell- Chocolate, cocoa, roasted malts, cherry

Taste- Roasted malts and bitter cocoa shine through followed by oats and dark fruits. Very pleasant!

Mouthfeel- Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. Pleasant smoothness.

Overall- An excellent American Porter by Deschutes. I enjoyed the roasted malts and bitter cocoa flavours. For me, it is a complex porter that delivers on all fronts. By far, one of the best American Porters I have had in a while. Worth seeking out and glad to have found this in Calgary.

Appearance: A pretty standard porter appearance. Great darkness with a very thin head.

Smell: Elite in this category. Wonderful roasted malt character that mixes with burnt dark fruit aroma. The burnt aroma lingers and really makes this a memorable experience.

Taste: I love the perfectly rounded flavor with this beer. Malt seamlessly intertwines with the burnt dark fruit flavors. Complex layers give the drinker multiple points of focus. One of the better porters I've had.

Mouthfeel: A thin lacing covers the mouth that is so gentle going down. No alcohol content is felt.

Overall: An elite porter. Not quite my gold standard of Founders Porter but this one is in the discussion.

Deschutes Black Butte Porter

Appearance: The porter upon which seemingly all other porters are judged pours like it deserves the status: four fingers of rocky, khaki head explode out of the glass and over the top from even the most delicate pour. The retention is out of this world, as is the lacing. The carbonation is barely visible inside the dark brown, nearly black liquid. One of the best looking porters this reviewer’s eyes have beheld.

Aroma: Chocolate, cherries, charred wood, coffee and all manner of dark roasted malts come through in spades. Dark fruits, mostly in the form of raisins, come through as well. A bit of a milk stout aroma is here, as well, making one think that lactose may be used in the brewing process. There is lots of great complexity here, and it all comes through spectacularly. It is difficult to find any true fault to this aroma, as it is utterly fantastic.

Taste: Unfortunately, the taste does not quite live up to the brilliance of the aroma. There is a lot more dried, dark fruit up front, which is followed by roasty malts varying between chocolate and coffee, along with a hint of hops that do not quite cut the sweetness of the overall brew. The problem is that the flavors are simply too weak and thin. Still, what is there is great-tasting.

Mouthfeel: Naturally, the thinness in the tastes persist here in the mouthfeel. It is slightly watery, though the carbonation is minimal, which is odd. The alcohol does provide a nice warming sensation, however. Nothing great here, just slightly above average.

Overall: While this is not a bad beer by any means (in fact, it is actually quite a good beer), I imagine the annual release of Black Butte is a much better version of this simply from being a bigger beer. All I have to say on that front is, “ISO”. 16.5/20
