Had this on-tap at The Yardhouse in San Diego and was served in a pint glass.
Dark brown color with ruby red hues and some light penetration along the sides. Appearance was almost like a cola.
Thin one finger off-white colored head that dissipated fairly quickly.
Aroma is a very nice blend of roasted malt, some notes of smokiness, chocolate malt balls and some espresso. Very pleasant and inviting aroma.
Taste is almost similar to the aroma, with nice sweetness upfront. The sweetness is very well balanced with the grainy notes and some bitter roasted malt/coffee notes. Very tasty, flavorful and easy drinking porter.
Almost medium-bodied mouthfeel to this porter. Not a lot of lacing along the insides of the glass.
Overall, this is a really good porter. Too bad I cannot get this in central NY or this would be one of my 'go-to' porters.
Definitely worth a try and comes recommended...Cheers!!!

Somehow I still see this as underrated despite its high scores. For a standard, easy to find porter, I don't know how it gets better than this. This one pours a very dark opaque brown from the bottle, turning completely black as it accumulates in the glass. Great coffee and chocolate aroma, with some beautiful roastiness wafting up from my glass. Flavor is a coffee explosion, earthy, with a beautiful backdrop of roasty bittersweet chocolate. Full body with adequate carbonation--nearly feels like an imperial porter. Finishes clean. Nearly perfect for the style. All others get compared to this.

Bottle poured into a nonic pint glass.
Best by 7-2-12.

A- Pours an almost a very dark brown color that looks black in the glass with ruby highlights when held up to a light, with very creamy dark tan head that forms a thick cap. Looks wonderful.

S- Wow, seems like theres a little bit of everything. Dark chocolate, coffee grounds, fresh light roasted coffee. Perfectly roasted dark malts.

T- Nice and roasty! Follows nose well. Very well balanced, none of the porter flavors stick out, but they're all there.

M- Creamy, but could be a tad thicker. Perfectly carbonated.

O- Deschutes did a good job with this one. Think I'll keep a bomber of this in the fridge at all times.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Transparent dark brown with red highlights. 2 fingers of khaki-colored head.

N: Nestle Quik chocolate milk and light hints of espresso. Smells quite nice!

T: Cola and hints of roasted nutty malts upfront. Some semi-sweet chocolate develops mid-palate. Finishes light with that Cola flavor and a dash of dark roast coffee and dark chocolate. Some citrusy hops are present in the finish as well.

M: Medium bodied, smooth and creamy with light carbonation.

O: The Cola flavor dominates with light notes of coffee and chocolate. Very easy drinking and refreshing little Porter.

Porters don’t get enough love, it seems. But here we have an American legend when it comes to this style: Deschutes Black Butte Porter, thanks to an order from InternetWines.com. Glad to have it.

Best before date is just two months after the date of this tasting (“BEST BY: 07/02/12”).

A: A hardly-aggressive pour yields a huge head, coming up from the bottom of the body to form a thick three fingers of foam – it’s all cream, as tan and rich as cappuccino foam. The retention is just superb, a full inch of milky residue and bundles upon bundles of lacing. Brownish-red body, very dark and plum-colored. Looks perfect.

S: Wonderful porter aromas abound: toasted grain, mocha, nutmeg, and coffee grounds come in with light roasted scents, mixing perfectly with a sweet note of vanilla ice cream, raspberry puree, chocolate syrup, and butterscotch. A very rich, but not incredibly complex nose.

T: A taste of bold roasts and the bitter, buttery character of nearly-burnt chocolate chip cookies take the dominant role in this full-bodied palate; in a word, robust. Though smoky, semi-sweet malts converge with some hazelnut, chocolate-covered banana, cappuccino, malted milk ball, and a bit of coconut flair, like in a Mounds candy bar. It’s all very balanced, peat mixing with syrups and malts sucking up the smoke with ease. The aftertaste, like most porters, is nothing but a touch of oatmeal and bitter, roasted oak chips.

M: This porter’s impressively silky, and memorable for its chewy presence at such low ABV. Its bitter flavor does not throw off the balance of the palate due mainly, I feel, to this absence of aggravating carbonation.

O: A seriously well-done porter, and one that I would gladly pick up again. Though it isn’t my favorite style, a cask of this would be an exhilarating find – or at least another bottle. Every porter brewer should strive to create something like this.

Poured from a bomber into a pint while visiting family in Portland.

A: Dark but clear. My family remarked it was like soy sauce. Very carbonated and laces nicely.

S: Strong coffee and malt in the nose. Very balanced.

T: Nice burn on the tip of the tounge. Followed by malts and chocolate flavors with some nice coffee and cream notes. Good coffee aftertaste.

M: Good burn and body.

O: Great porter. Nicely balanced and exhibits all of the characteristics of the style. Everyone should try this beer.
