Pours dark but translucent with a really nice, fluffy head that's a little uncharacteristic for a porter.

Smells firm and portery. Bitter barley mixing with sour barley, chocolate and coffee and very light nodes of fruit.

Tastes like it smells, only not quite as firm because the back end runs a little thin. It's almost like they tried smoothing out the portery roughness at the beginning, trying to make it more sweet, but I kind of like a little bit of a challenge in my porter's back end. Still, solidly brewed, sessionable, and a nice complement to a meal.

One of six beers at a five person blind porter tasting including: Anchor Porter, Big Sky Bobo's Robust Porter, Deschutes Black Butte, Harvest Moon Pigs Ass Porter, Samuel Smith Taddy, and Sierra Nevada Porter. All of these are shelf beers in Montana.

This pours dark brown with clearly red highlights. On the nose there is dark chocolate, roasted malt, and a slight pine note underlying them. In the mouth the roast dominates a bit, but the chocolate and pine are there also. The finish is long and has a combined roast and hops bitterness.

Overall, this is a good example of both a porter and a beer that is better than the sum of its parts. No one thing stands out here but everything melds together well. Each of us agreed that this was second or third in the mix.
