side by side with the XXIII.

Pour is somewhat lighter than the BA XXIII. Same frothy head (maybe a touch lighter and frothier). More mahogany hues than teh BA version.

Smell is much lighter, more comparable to Edmund Fitzgerald. Lighter, more drinkable, and much more balanced.

Light and drinkable. Subtle hints of coffee and chocolate, with a dry feeling that I usually associate with Nut Brown ales. Almost feels like a brown ale, actually.

On tap at Beer Gardens in Folsom.

Appearance - Pours a dark, cola brown with reddish hue on the outer edges. The head is an off-white tan, and leaves behind a sparse but sticky lace.

Smell - Lots of chocolate, roasted malt, and faint coffee.

Taste - Big chocolate with some bitterness, subtle coffee notes, and a nice, sweet caramel undertone to give this porter great balance.

Mouthfeel - Full bodied, creamy to begin, then a nice, tingly carbonation tickles the tongue. Slightly dry on the finish.

Overall - One of my favorite porters, and a classic at that. This beer goes a long way in defining what an American Porter is and should be.

nice looking porter, black with amber tints and a nice light tan head and good lacing.

Smells very nice. Lightly roasty and smoky notes with a touch of chocolate.

Taste follows somewhat along the nose, but even more complex and delicious. There's a great smoky roasted backbone with sweet milk chocolate, a wisp of coffee, and a very well proportioned yet forward and complex hop profile. Really good, this may be my favorite porter I've tried yet!

Sweet, full bodied, smooth as hell and incredibly satisfying. The hops finish it off with just a touch of twang that really surprises me, and sets this porter apart from the rest.

Monstrous! Great porter, definitely try and include in trades to people who like porters.

I poured a bottle into a small tulip-shaped glass. It's a dark brown but not cloudy porter with about a half-inch lightest brown well-retained foamy head. I had trouble making out much of a smell (my own bad nose). The taste...mmm. Sweet, fizzy, complex hops, and a clean smooth aftertaste. Chocolate, cherry but light on fruit without phenols. I didn't detect any buttery flavors. Others said lightly chewy which is right on the mark with me. Bottom line: this is a delicious brew. Can I review it again and again?

Purchased a 6er while in Hawaii. Poured into a pint glass.

A- It's a very deep brown, almost black color.

S- Smells like malted coffee. The nose is malt, chocolate, hops and some coffee. This isn't bitter, very smooth, creamy, balanced and inviting.

T- I was very happy with the combination of coffee and malt flavor and it wasn't overly bitter.

M- It is smooth, creamy, and doesn't leave any oily or too bitter of a flavor.

I was very happy with this beer because I have had the BB XXII and expected this to be slightly below. In all seriousness, I enjoyed it more than the special release. Glad I have a few more left to enjoy.

appearance: great looking brew! pours a tar black with a nice 1 inch white head

aroma: not much going on here unfortunately, the only down side to this brew

palate: perfect body for a porter. drinks smoothly with a bit of hop sting to it. little carbonation, alcohol very mild

taste: big smokey flavors with some chocolate and malty flavors too.

Black butte porter

Pours a super dark brown with a beautiful creamy two finger head.  Sheets of lacing on my CBS snifter.  Great looking Porter.

The nose is malt, chocolate, hops and some coffee.  This isn't bitter, very smooth, creamy, balanced and inviting.

Wow.  I'm not a huge Porter fan, but this beer is delicious.  Same profile, and all the flavors work in perfect harmony.  Maybe a tiny bit of vanilla on the edges.  The best of this style I've had.    None of the 'burned coffee' taste I get in so many Porters.

Feel is super malty, creamy, with just a tinge of hops on the outside.

Overall, this is an outstanding Porter.  I'll definitely buy this again if I see it.   Highly recommended.
