Poured out of a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Freshness date is listed as 5/28/12.

Appearance is a completely pitch-black look color with slight reddish tones when placed under light. Carbonation is visible on the edges of the glass, but there is hardly any large head to speak of - a practically thin ring tops the beer, as well as slight laciness. A very well presentable porter.

Smell is nothing but extreme coffee notes all around. Dark chocolate and German-style dark bread attempts to fight these notes, with very little success. Due to the coffee aroma, there is a huge sensation of roastiness that comes with every whiff. The hops do a great job at supplying slight spiciness to the aroma, but that coffee aroma is really *the* intended aroma of this beer.

To be perfectly honest, this is everything I personally want in a porter. Coffee flavors abound, there's a peculiar sweetness and roastiness that makes this beer a must-try. There's creamy coffee malts at the front and plenty of hoppiness that accompanies the initial sip. While holding few fruity aromas, this is a wonderful meal in a bottle. It contains only enough carbonation to make it refreshing to drink as well, while allowing the roasted flavors to make it extremely comforting.

A great porter. Extremely balanced and flavorful, and absolutely recommended. Truly an inspiration to aspiring craft brewers everywhere.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass. Thanks to miikezombie for the ho ho hook up.

A: Dark brown pour with some lighter brown tones coming in when the beer is held to the light of the laptop. Relatively aggressive pour leads to a 1.5 finger tan head that dissipates over a few minutes leaving sticky thick lacing in an inconsistent manner throughout the session.

S: Sweet malts take center stage and they don't hog it. They move quickly out of the way for toasted chocolate malts (with a crystal malt undertone) moving on to coffee and cocoa. However, the nose is not even remotely bitter. It's a delicious nose.

T: Holy cow. This is an amazing dance of flavors on the tongue. From the cocoa to the malts to the bitterness of the coffee and the hops. It's sweet and bitter all wrapped up into one. I thought this was going to be super sweet thanks to the malt in the nose but it was much more balanced than that.

M: Wonderful mouthfell, medium bodied, perfectly carbonated. Creates a creamy coating in my mouth that makes me want to continue to reach for it.

O: One of the best porters I've ever had. Shit, one of the best beers I've ever had! Dammit, Deschutes, please please please distribute to the East Coast!

After opening, poured into a glass. I got a really crisp clean smell right off the bat. I haven't had too many, but this is one of the better porters I've ever had. It had a smoky scent, and the aftertaste also had a smoky taste. It's a bit similar to the Obsidian, but less of an aftertaste. The texture was excellent, and goes down smoothly. A solid American porter.

12oz bottle from pokesbeerdude. Thanks again!

A - Poured into a fresh pint glass and has a good midnight black color but when held to the light you can see a slight deep reddish hue. Perfect 2 finger light mocha colored head. Great lacing.

S - Everything is nice and subtle with this beer. No one ingredient dominates. Hints of roasted coffee, very light smell of chocolate

T – Sweet malt with that nice roasted flavor. Very light coffee and chocolate flavors. All the flavors are balanced very well.

M – Not a heavy porter more on the medium bodied scale. Good carbonation for the entire drink.

O - This is a great session porter. Nothing overpowering and you can stand to drink a bunch of these. Wish we could get it in PA all the time.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Best by date is 6/10/12.

A - Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a nice a creamy two-finger, light tan head. Good head retention and excellent lacing.

S - A nice, rich malt character. The aroma is made up of a combination of roasted malts, charcoal, milk chocolate and coffee/espresso. The slightest bit of hops hit the nose as well.

T - Creamy milk chocolate reaches the palate first. Big roasted malts and subtle coffee notes come in. Nice bit of hops at the end give it some bitterness. Very balanced and enjoyable.

M - To call this beer "easy drinking" would be an understatement. Creamy and silky smooth. Medium bodied with medium-light carbonation.

O - This beer really stands out for me. An amazing porter that is so easy to drink. For beer so readily available, this beer is fantastic. I know it doesn't have the sex appeal of limited releases but this is a must try.

on-tap - pint glass

A: A nice dark brown, almost mahogany. Lets some light through. Very nice light tan head that hangs around and leaves lacing down the glass.

S: Roasted malts, espresso, hops

T: Very mellow roasted malt flavor rounded out by hints of milk chocolate and coffee with a slight hoppiness. Very easy to drink.

M: Fairly light with an easy, smooth drinkability.

O: Overall one of my favorite porters. It's my "go-to" porter when I'm at the bar. A great beer to use to introduce non-porter/stout drinkers to the type.
