The quality of the head on this beer was outstanding. Thick, full, creamy mocha colored head with retention as good as it gets. Plenty of sticky icky lacing left behind as it settled.

Smell- cocoa beans, vanilla, crushed bananas and roasted malts. The sweet candy like aroma from the banana mixes very well with the roasted malts to create an inviting aroma, lets dig in.

T- Smooth and sweet start. Waves of vanilla and bananas to tease the palate of a banana cake, followed by the bitter-sweet taste of the roasted malts, expresso and a hint of chocolate. Also detect some roasted nuts.

M- Chewy and oily. Low carbonation. Perfect for the style.

O- One hell of a porter to say the least. It's got sweet elements as well as the roasted to balance it out. Enjoy this one, I know I did!

Taste - ...I get a faint chocolate sweetness. Any bitterness is not overpowering, so it stays sweet. But I find the taste, while decent, still kind of bland. I don't think a dark beer should ever strike me as bland.

I'm having almost zero luck finding a porter I well and truly like. I feel like if you're going to go the sweet route, go the sweet route and give it a little more chocolate-y goodness. Even a bittersweet like dark chocolate. It would compliment the semi-dry finish. But there's not nearly enough of any flavor that makes it stand out, so it just falls flat to me as a dark beer.

A - Black as night. Nice finger of head... very small bubbles which dissipate quickly. Large bubbles stick around. Appears thin.

S - subtle chocolate, touch of sweetness. Not crazy intense but nice.

T - Super nice. The aftertaste is brilliant. Starts out with a touch of chocolate, malts, and coffee. No bitterness, not much sweetness. Absolutely fantastic!

M - Perfect carbonation. Even though it looks thin this beer has a nice full mouthfeel!

O - This beer is awesome. 5%? I could drink this all night! The taste is sublime and the balance is absolutely fantastic! Closing on perfect for a porter!

I love how much fresh Deschutes stuff abounds on the beer shelves around here...
Poured into a pint glass producing about 2 fingers of an off white/light brown head. The body is cola like with lots of amber in the light.
Slightly roasty with some coffee, chocolate, and floral/grassy hop character.
Roasty coffee flavors hit the tongue upfront with some hops and bitterness. Light chocolate flavor.
Slightly drying with moderate carbonation and a medium-light body.

12oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a dark brown with three fingers of off white foam. Head retention is amazing.

S: A mixture of roasted malts, milk and dark chocolate, caramel, and light smoke. Balanced sweetness.

T: Tastes similar to smell, but not quite as strong. Roasted malts and smoke are balanced by caramel sweetness. Moderate hoppy bitterness is also present. Not much chocolate flavor at all and quite watery.

M: Quite thin but creamy carbonation.

O: The flavors are there, but they are far too weak in my opinion.. The mouthfeel is also quite thin. The aroma is pretty good, but the flavor is simply mediocre. Very disappointing after recently reviewing Edmund Fitzgerald, one of my favorite porters.
