Pours a very dark brown with glints of red in the light. Has a creamy light tan head with decent retention. Rich lacing on the glass. Dark roasted malts, sorghum, and dark chocolate aromas. Nice, creamy mouthfeel. Dark chocolate, heavy cream, without the usual coffee acidity one gets from a porter like this one. Nice sweet lactose makes this a pillowy sweet porter. Very good beer.

Pours pitch black color with brown showing through when held up to the light and creamy tan 1 finger head that faded slowly, leaving very good foamy lacing coating the sides and rings as it went down. A very handsome porter.

Smells of coffee beans, molasses, syrup, brown sugar, charcoal, roasted grains, burnt toast, cocoa, caramel and some floral hops as it fades; overall the nose was roasted with burnt malts, grains and a sweetness from cocoa powder or brown sugar.

Tastes of coffee beans, molasses, syrup, caramel, brown sugar, charcoal, roasted grains, burnt toast, floral hops, piney hops, cocoa powder, light vanilla, chocolate milk, herbs and some biscuit or cracker that fades into a sweet toffee flavor and then finishes off pretty bitter, like the hops were biting to grab attention. Man the bitterness lingered, leaving a semi-dry coating that was a combo of sweetness and burnt wood – it was actually quite enjoyable and like a great coffee to start your day off, but with a slight alcohol kick.

Mouthfeel is light, creamy and smooth, with low carbonation, a medium body and a bitter finish. A real nice porter that is sweet, bitter and tasty all at once and really enjoyable as it goes down. I recommend trying this as it went down easy and was very good overall.

Finally got a chance to try this while in Las Vegas, (It was on tap at Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant in the MGM) but walked away very disappointed. For all the hype I didn’t see how this porter was anything above mediocre at best…and I mean at best.

The aroma and flavor were quite boring. I only smelled a little nutty earthiness, and the taste was similar, with maybe faint notes of chocolate and molasses but overall quite tame and lifeless. I wish it was a little richer. What surprised me the most was its almost watery mouthfeel. This was a big letdown for me. I can’t imagine ever reaching for this one again, but a part of feels I should try it again just in case there was some funny business going on at the restaurant….my friend shared the same thoughts about it.

a: pitch black body with a thick creamy tan head that stood two fingers tall and lasted five minutes before settling into a rocky cap atop the beer. head retention and lacing are some of the best i have seen for the style, the entire glass is covered in a fine film of lacing.

s: smells a little lactic at first, but that is quickly over ridden by a surprising hop presence. notes of roasted grains and chocolate hide in the background.

t: as it crosses the lips there is a definate milk stout flavor going on. while it sits on the tongue there are waves of flavors coming and going. everything from roasted malts to hops to a milk chocolte finish.

m: rich and creamy, excellent carbonation and a nice hop bite on the backend before the creamy milk chocolate takes over.

o: awesome porter, one of the best out there and worth seeking out.
