Purchased a single from Total Wine, Brea, CA

App- A true dark brown color with some yellow and amber mixed in on the bottom. A giant 3 finger slow pillowy head. Huge lines of cling and lace all the way down the glass. A great looking beer.

Smell- Multi faceted and multi aromatics on this one. A small hop bitter. A little bit of roasted malts, some milk chocolate.

Taste- I liked this one a lot and I am glad I came back to it. Opens with some great malt notes in terms of roast and a little bit of chocolate. A staple of Deschutes is their small hop note and this carried through quite well.

Mouth- A little bit of a light/medium body with a paired medium carbonation. A perfect bit of bubbles with a great milk chocolate creamy feel.

Drink- I like this one alot. I am not always a fan of porters but when they are done right like this and like Samuel Smith. I will keep coming back to this one and Deschutes.

Pours a black color. 1/4 inch head of an off-tan color. Good retention and great lacing. Smells of roasted malt, sweet malt, slight dry hop, citrus hops, hint of chocolate, and a hint of spice/herb. Fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an low carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, hint of chocolate, hint of roasted malt, hint of dry hop, hint of oatmeal, citrus hops, and a hint of spice/herb. Overall, good aroma, feel, body, and blend.

12oz bottle (best by 5/28/12) pours a deep dark brown with a khaki head that dissipates pretty quickly.

Aroma is rich roasted malt, chocolate, a hint of black coffee, and floral hops.

Taste follows nose. Really pleasant combination of earthy flavors. Nice floral hoppy finish sets this one apart from other porters. I'm not really even a porter fan and I like this one quite a bit.

Overall this is a classic Northwest beer, one I should revisit more often. I see it as a direct ancestor of the new black IPA style.

Served on Tap in Denver Airport (a craft brew gem for layovers).

A: Dark brown, burnt coffee black with thin tan head.

S: Coffee bean, bitter chocolate

T: Very nice, mild marshmallow, unsweetened chocolate, coffee.

M: Not too thin, drinks like a dry stout.

O: About what I was expecting due to the high reviews of this beer. Porters aren't really my style, but I would not mind having another pint.

I can't believe I haven't had this one yet...

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a standard pint glass.

It produced a creamy 1 1/2 finger khaki head that dissipated rather quickly, but left a nice ring of lace. It is a very deep mahogany with red hues when held to light.

Coffee and chocolate with a bit of toffee in the nose.

Just like the nose. Coffee and chocolate upfront, with some toffee in the middle. There is a nice hop backing here that keeps the sweetness reined in. Exceedingly well balanced.

Super smooth, with very nice carbonation. It manages to be relatively light for how creamy it feels. Not too sweet, not too dry.

This is a truly great Porter that you can get your hands on easily. Classic creamy, chocolate/coffee taste. In this age of massive Imperial Stouts it's nice to kick back with one of these. Recommended to any fan of the style, or to any new BA looking to have a classic Porter. Cheers!
