Poured from 12oz bottle into tulip glass. Aroma is heavy chocolate coffee, sweet. Appearance is dark brown almost black with medium tan thick head. Taste is chocolate and coffee forward. Smooth and creamy. Sweet maltiness lingers as does a smooth easy coffee roast. Bit of black licorice. Palate is medium and good carbonation throughout. Overall this was an uninspiring porter for me.

Black Butte Porter is a decent porter. Decent, but a little boring.

A: Dark red/brown colour and a head that fades pretty fast. 3.5

S: Sweet with a little coffee. Some tanginess. 3.5

T: Malty with some weak coffee flavour. Not super strong. Some toffee from the crystal malt. 4

M. Little fizzy bubbles. 4

O: 3.5

Poured into a pub glass, the head takes up the top third of the glass. Awesome tan lacing sticks to the glass. The body is a dark, almost black color at an arm's length. As I pull the glass closer, I see there is some clarity around the edges with a dark ruby red core when held to the light.

Smell has the typical dark roasted aromas of a porter. A little wood smoke, coffee and bitter chocolate. The taste is smooth bitterness, with a hint of hops in the finish.

Mouthfeel is silky slick. Very soft body and a moderate ABV of 5.2% enhances the overall drinkability. What an excellent addition to beers available in Missouri

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

A: nice deep brown--almost black, with red hues at the edges when held up to light. Sandy-colored head with about one finger on my pour, sticks around for several minutes. Pretty good lacing.

S: mostly coffee, roasted malts, and I swear I get some burbon characteristics. Chocolate there as well.

T: mostly coffee and chocolate, but there is definitely a faint but present hop backbone. Very well balanced.

M: pretty smooth, small carbonation, good but nothing outstanding. Not much alcohol.

O: a very very good porter, perhaps my favorite. Highly recommend. Very drinkable, very approachable. I hope Deschutes starts distributing out here in Maine.

Poured into a pint glass.

It's a dark ruby color with a thick tan head and nice lacing.

The smell is dark chocolate and roasted malts. One of the best smelling beers I've ever had.

Roasted malts dominate. Some chocolate hints. The bittering hops some out in the back end. Fabulous.

It's medium to full bodied with appropriate carbonation.

This is the first Deschutes I've ever had. I hope the rest are this wonderful.
