Old Sam Hain is named for the god of death, or so they tell me at the bar. You can learn all sorts of things at the bar, though I would not otherwise have imagined that the god of death was named Sam, or that he drank such uninspired beer. As I know it, Samhain was a Celtic holiday marking the end of summer on the first of November and celebrated the evening before, an event now known as Halloween.

Be that as it may, harvest time is as good a moment as any to boil some barley in a pot and Old Sam Hain comes in with a beautiful clouded pumpkin color though with no head or lace. It has a flat yeasty nose, a malty flavor with a twang of citrus, and just a touch of abstract spice.

Sam Hain is reasonably clean but it would, in my estimation, be a big mistake to serve this to the god of death. A very big mistake.

Another review I missed. Had on tap on 3-8-12.

This local favorite has been made at Deschutes Brewery for virtually every year since our inception. It has a nice, round, creamy mouthfeel from Victory malt, Carawheat and Flaked Barley paired with the light spice/ mint profile of EKG hops.

A - Very cloudy orange with almost no head.

S - Sweet and malty.

T - Bready, wheat, malts.

D - Heavy body and low carbonation.

O - Heavy an unispired. Pass.
