This has been the first let-down beer I've had from deschutes. It's not a bad beer per se, but it let down in couple key areas for my winter warmer criteria.
A: A rich firebrick red with a toast colored head. It certainly looks the part, and I'm excited just ogling it. The head is well retained and a bit of lacing clings to the glass.
S: Maybe a faint hint of spices, but bitterness cuts above all else. Caramel, toastiness, and a bitter earthiness also arise.
T: Bitterness seems to overrule the malt character that I would normally expect to dominate. Black tea seems to be ruling the aftertaste, and though there is a dash of spiced flavor, I expect more of it in a winter warmer. I'm bummed out that this isn't more malt-centered.
M/D: It does have a decent heft to the mouthfeel, but I don't want to drink a hoppy winter warmer when it's this cold out. If I want a Pale Ale, I'll go buy a pale ale.
If you are more of a hophead, this could be a good intro beer to the category. I'm still left wanting for more malt and spices.

On tap at the Local Taphouse.
Pours a red colour, bit of haze. Head is off-white, webbed lace but sticks to the glass. Looks nice.
Smells like banana esters, with some dry sweet spice, nutmeg and vanilla. Touch of raisin. Could have more richness and more robustness, but decent.
Taste is chocolatey. Dry cocoa with some toffee, sultanas and some dried orange peel. Not much spice; more fruit and lots of chocolate. Not bad.
Full body, nicely textured. Slightly dry on the back.
Nice beer; have had better spiced Winter seasonals though, generally better because of more spice.
