Roommate brought these home, so not sure what the store cost is as he works at the distributor and gets them for $10/case. 12oz brown bottles with a freshness date on the side of the label. The website says they change the art work on the label each year, so it will look different from year to year.

The beer poured a clear dark garnet color with a 1½-finger tan head that lasts a few minutes and leaves tons of lacing.

The beer smells like molasses and caramel.

Not as sweet as the smell wouold indicate. More of an earthy hop flavor along with a dry roastiness. There's a little caramel/molasses flavor underneath, but not enough to call it sweet. There is also a touch of nuttiness and spicy alcohol, but still the 6 different hops used dominate the flavor. 60 IBUs, but not overly bitter.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Despite its high ratings, I'm not a big fan of this one.

Really like this brewery, wish I could get them more. When I got this beer, for some reason I figured a festive winter ale should be aged... not realizing it was only 6.7%, so a 2009 vintage to try. I hope I didn't ruin it. Thanks to bendretread for this one.

A careful pour spares me the big sediment sludge on the bottom, and yields a nice fluffy 1/2 finger tan head that fades at a quick pace, decent lacing at least, a dark murky maroon black-raspberry reddish almost purply colored sediment laden depth of darkness.

Nose does have a slight tinge of oxidation, but I'll ignore that, and then turns to a nice malt, toasty reddish malt with lots of candy, toffee, caramel, a little molasses like syrup, a bit of a nutty note with nice candied figs, dates, trail mix like, some nice soft aged malt like notes too, nice dark syrup, touch of a biscuity malt too even. It has all the notes of a nice English old ale that's 15 years old, complete with the oxidation included. I eventually get hints of baking spices that are mostly muted by now.

Taste brings lots more syrupy malts, candy, caramel, toffee, lots of nutty flavors with a bit of fig and candied dates, etc. Just a bit of molasses syrup to go wtih the toffee and caramel like notes, and faint baking spices on the back end. A little aged soft malt feel too, but not much. Now the bad, that definite aged more than it should have taste, lots of cardboard and oxidation all over the place, even a little chalky. A hint of an earthy herbal hop note still comes through even... somehow. Not sweet really either, or very syrupy. Finish is drier but sticky, more oxidation, fair amount of herbal spicy hopsa nd bitterness, bit more dried fruits and nuts, and little dried molasses syrup.

mouth is med bod but a bit softer, stil pretty good carb.

Overall, I'll try to put aside the oxidation as that was my fault not the beer's. nice candy malt profile, nice dried fruits and nuts, sweet candy notes without too much sweetness or syrupy feel, faint hint of baking spices I'm sure was a lot more when it was fresh, and even still a decent hop profile in there somehow. Not bad, still not that great compared to many of the other Deschutes beers, but still good.
