Mirror Pond was my first beer. Well, my first craft beer. But as I didn't drink much bmc or anything, it was one of my first, and really started me on the road to where I am today. Since then I've had most of the Deschutes brews available in Seattle, but for some reason never had the Inversion IPA.
With a vigorous pour into my Full Sail Pint glass, this is a good-looking ale. Bright, clear copper with a large, sticky tan head. As the foam receeds, and before I've even had a sip, wallpaper lacing is left all around the glass. Very nice.
The appearance really got my hopes up, but the smell put my hopes in check. Not that it's bad, no not bad at all. The smell delivers what the label advertises, soft caramel malt. I get a nice maltiness and citrus hoppiness, but it's not so strong. The smell is very good, but weak in comparison to the last IPA I had, which was SN Celebration. That beer rocked my world in all categories. This one smells good, but for the style it's not so hot.
Alright, tasting time. My first thought after my first swallow is that the taste is similar to the smell, somewhat muted. Definitely tasty and satisfying, a fine example of the style and another solid offering from an excellent brewery. After a few more drinks, I'm liking the taste even better. The NW hops are ample, but it is good without being over-the-top kick-ass bitter. Very smooth, nice mouthfeel and no trace of 6.8% abv, highly drinkable. The smell even opens up a bit as the beer warms in the glass. Yes, now, just before hitting that review button, I must bump the smell score up from 3.5 to 4.0 as it's really come around to reveal an ale with loads of depth and character. Overall quite good. I will get it again some day, and recommend it to my brother who is a newb and can't handle hop bombs.
