Very different than most IPA's, it smells and tastes very sweet and fruity rather than piney and bitter like most west coast IPA's, but still very good.

It is still within it's style though. I'd probably buy their Obsidian Stout instead however.

Orange/brown beer under excellent creamy pale white head. Very good lacing throughout the drinking experience.

Great smell - citrus hops and pine hops. Not as strong smell as some IPAs but what is there is good.

Taste is surprisingly buttery, creamy, less hoppy than you'd think. Hops are piney but are balanced evenly by caramel malts.

An easy drinking sessionable IPA. Another good Deschutes creation.

Appearance - Okay. Nothing fantastic. Red copper.

Smell - Herbally toned caramel malts. Some red fruits. Maybe rooibos?

Taste & Mouth -Sorta toasty for an IPA, but nice. Red fruits. Vanilla. Subtle passionfruits. Red D'anjou pears, subtle gala apples, red grapes. Moderate grassy hops.

Overall - I like it. Go for the NWPA if you get the chance though. Better ale in my opinion. Wish they brewed it year-round.

Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass form a 12oz bottle.

Pours a nice dark copper amber color with a nice off white half inch head that recedes slowly and leaves some awesome sticky lacing.

Sweet malty notes come up front quick with some nice caramel notes and bread. Definitely some nice grain notes in there as well. Slight pine and hop citrus notes on the back end. A bit flowery and grassy.

Interesting take on an IPA. Starts off with toasty bready caramel malts. Very earthy and grainy with some pine notes intermingled in there. The middle of the brew has some more citrus notes in there that come up and work together with some nice sweet caramel notes. Very balanced IPA. CAramel notes with intense mouth puckering bitterness. Not typical of the West Coast IPAs but still very good. Nice carbonation and slightly sticky body with a dry finish.

Nice brew with good caramel notes but an intense hop kick and well rounded flavors that all pop and stand well on their own. Good brew.

12oz Bottle from City Beer in San Fran for 1.99. Thanks to J for this one

Appearance - Clear copper colour with a large size fizzy beige coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, caramel, hops/herbal notes, grapefruit, dark fruits

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and most of the taste is made up of caramel, hops, malts and dark fruits. It actually tastes more like a hoppy barleywine than an IPA in my books.. It ends with a dark fruit and malt aftertaste with a good dose of lingering hop bitterness.

Overall - An interesting take on the style. When I took it out of the fridge I had my hopes up for a fruity/juicy IPA so I was a little disappointed when I tasted it. It's still very good, just not what I was expecting.

Review from 4/2011 notes. Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours a clear dark red orange amber. Half finger off-white head and light lacing. Sweet malt and light aromatic hop aroma. Flavor is sweet and caramel malt and moderate hops, aromatic hop bite on the finish moderated by the malt. A very pleasant IPA. The hops are not outstanding, but everything is done well and has a nice ratio of hops to malt. Definitely a repeater.
