Appearance: Walnut-brown color with a thin lace of head that persists. Carbonation provides some texture to the color.

Smell: Woody, piney, a little citrus.

Taste: Piney bite up front, some grapefruit and a generous caramel that lasts to the finish. The piney flavor persists in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Moderately heavy from the malt profile, typical of an IPA-style.

Overall: One of the better Deschutes beers I've had. Their Black Butte Porter is amazing, this one is very good. A little unbalanced and very piney, which may be a turn-off to some. As an emerging Hophead, I like it. I'd drink a couple of these in a session.

another winner from deschutes. this ipa is complex and drinkable. taste like a wide variety of hops blended together, i can pick up on a fruity hop as well as the sturdy piney hops. has a lighter feel due to the use of pale and crystal malts, which make this a really sessionable ipa, despite its higher abv. more subtle than many american india pale ales, this one stands out because it is much more than a bitter hop bomb. every beer i have had from these guys has been excellent.

Pours with less head than many but the lace stains the glass and etches. Smell is strongly of grapefruit and toffee. Some roasty-ness and hints of lemon candy. Amber-brown, and almost clear. Lightly carbonated.

KA-pow! Bitterness starts and ends the flavor. In the middle are grapefruit atop background pine and grassiness, but citrus dominates. The malt sugars try but fail to keep up. Wonderfully, rewardingly bitter and aggressive. Cleansing.

As the beer warms, there's a light savory smell, reminiscent of bullion, with hints of coriander. Pine is more pronounced as the beer warms. Another reviewer used the word "dank." There are some dank smells as the beer approaches room temperature.

Mouthfeel is a bit light: generally I'd like a bit more body, yet I think I will reach for this when I want to wash away malt sweetness altogether. This is a no fooling bitter IPA.

Poured from bottle into snifter glass. Pours a hazy amber/copper color with a two finger white head that lasts nicely throughout the session. Smells nicely of orange, apricot, citrus, and pine with a faint bready caramel malt hidden deep underneath. Taste is sweet malt with plenty of citrus and pine bitterness to keep the sweetness in check. Long lingering pine bitterness in a slightly sweet finish. Crisply carbonated, medium body with a sticky resinous mouthfeel. Very nice IPA.

Had on-tap at Deschutes in Portland, OR. Poured a clear, fairly dark amber color with a nice fluffy white head that receded pretty quickly, leaving mostly spotty lacing towards the top of the glass. Had an aroma of floral/earthy/citrusy hops and GRAPEFRUIT! Taste was a very nice hop blend and I really got a large taste of grapefruit which I found to be very nice with the hop profile. I also tasted some sweet malts that blended well. Surprisingly, despite the hoppiness of this beer, it was pretty smooth.

Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Smooth for an IPA, likely due to the touch of sweet malts. Recommended!

First time for any brew from deschutes. Good look and smell. I think the aroma could have a nicer, more alpha strong smell to it. Nice carbonation. Small amout of fruits and citrus. Really nice and easy drinker. Light golden color. Ok balance to it. I heard great things about this brew while friends were in Vegas, maybe expected a little more. Overall I'm excited to see what else they have to offer. Def worth trying if you have available; but could find other, more well rounded brews.

12 oz. bottle poured into a mug.

Appearance: Pours a clear copper color with a bit of visible carbonation. Airy off-white head dissipates relatively quick, but leaves a bit of lacing.

Smell: Mild citrus aroma, with a big malt base... some caramel in there, but not too sweet.

Taste: Very similar to the taste, with some citrusy hops, malts, and a hint of caramel. Bittersweet aftertaste of citrus, pine, and caramel.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Fairly smooth, and a tad viscous.

Drinkability: Good ABV, no alcohol taste, and a nice flavor.

A pleasant and easy-to-drink IPA. Perhaps a bit too malty, without very much character, but still nice. Solid, but not my favorite offering from Deschutes.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a mug (at home for the holidays and access to proper glassware is a touch limited). Best by date of 2/29/12.

A - Pours a slightly hazy amber with a nice big frothy amber head. Very good head retention, leaving very nice lacing.

S - Big hops, with a bit of malt backbone in there to balance it out. Big citrus and piney/resiny hops.

T - Big hops again, with the citrusy and bittering hops dominating. Finishes with the sweet malt backbone.

M - medium bodied w/ moderate carbonation.

O - A very nice IPA; big hop flavors, and decently drinkable.

Best by 03/08/12

A: Huge head, a lot of lacing. Copper colored, not exactly pale.

S: Grapefruit, pine, resin-y, caramel.

T: Graperuit overload, lots of pine, a bit of dankness. Close to no 'malt backbone' here.

M: A woodsy, dry, very bitter aftertaste lingers long afterwards.

O: A barely average IPA, not enough sweetness to balance out the massive bittering hops.
