Ignore the scores you see above, I did that to trick the system into giving this bear a 4.6. Screw you beer advocate for giving us the weakest rating system possible.
Went out of my way to go back to Deschutes for the 09' Abyss on tap. Why? Because it's an epic beer.
I want to give this a higher score but I can't. The head is a nice mocha color perfect for the style. It's black, like darkness sure.. opaque as hell. But the head is wimpy and small, maybe one finger. The lacing is non-existent just like the head retention.
Spot on and bravo. Bourbon, chocolate, wood, and coffe on first impression. Very boozy but in the best kind of way. This is a complex beer, I get dark hints of fruit and molassess and vanilla.
I was initially unimpressed, can you imagine that. Then wisdom sent me caution in the form of a backhand. Why am I drinking this beer so cold. So I waited, and ordered another. When it's cold all you taste is carbonation and a slight burning. When it's warm you get the real deal; liquid heaven. Smoke, wood, and bouron are here hanging out with chocolate and Mr. Coffee Bean. Vanilla is riding on bourbon's shoulders. Ash is over in the corner playing halo. They all greet you like old friends. Do not drink cold or you will be a big fat loser.
I feel stuck in 4.75 mode. This beer does everything almost as good as perfect, but never quite perfect. It's like in Nascar, you can get second place in every race but win the entire thing in the end. This is a perfect mix of creamy and ashy. Once it warms up the carbonation really really mellows out; truly remarkable
I'm just going to order another one.. only one more I promise. Actually funny story my friends tried to leave and I just snuck back into the place and ordered another one. Then they all did... Good times.

Opened on 7/21/14 and poured into Westbrook Snifter. Not often am I moved to write a review but this was surprisingly delicious.
S: mostly molasses and caramel. smell was a let down compared to the taste...was totally expecting a dextrose bomb
T: a nice amount of coffee, chocolate and ending with a nice amount of roast. the bitterness of the finish really balances the brew out so it’s not overly sweet or cloying.
M: chewy and perfectly carbonated. this was one of the highlights of the brew as it’s perfectly carbed and chewy.
O: I really enjoyed this. Barrel Aged beers had recently been letting me down. Too much cloying sweetness and not enough roast and bitter finish. This was a wonderful reminder of how delicious BA stouts can be.
