2007 reserve, poured into la choufe snifter. took forever to get the wax or plastic off of the top.

A - this is perfect. no getting around it. there is plenty of head to go around (hehe), and the body is about black as the midnight sun. head is a dark brown, has amazing retention, and has lacing to boot. there is nothing wrong with this beer: the amount of head is perfect, the colour of the head is perfect, and the body is a super dark brown, just not quite black (but who the hell care, or can tell). nothing more to report; this beer looks perfect (and talk about lacing for an RIS!)

S - malty, fruity, boozy. this is pretty good, but I think I like the way the dark lord, which I just had, tastes. let me have it warm up a bit. this is the beer that makes me wake up; it smells amazing, but the only problem is intensity. top notes are molasses malts, maybe a bit of coffee. the molasses-caramel malts are the most prevalent in the top nose. mid-notes of chocolate and a sweeter fruit quite easy to pick up, bottom notes of coffee, hops and licorice. let's drink this bitch.

T - sweet holy Jesus this is amazing. the initial taste is chocolate coffee malty booze exposition in my mouth. goddamn. there are also some brief hops, and the malt is undeniably sweet as it makes the rounds around the parts fo the mouth. the chocolate coffee initial taste is so amazing: it really tastes like I am finishing off a Godiva dark chocolate bar with a big mug of espresso. But there is even more!: the booze begins to develop into this spicy kind of rum flavor as its is swished in the mouth. this is one of the most complicated ris's i have ever had, and is easily deserving of the number two spot in the RIS category; lets move onto the finish: undeniable chocolate coffee flavours, while some bourbon is also present. the finish is majestic, like a bald eagle bourlying around the rocky mountains, while holding an american flag. the aftertaste is actually like a bunch of pixies in your mouth, making love to your tongue. in actuality the ftertaste is like a chocolate whiskey, with a medium strong hop presence. quite perfect if i have ever had a good ris before. the taste itself is malty and more of the chocolate taste; maybe it shouldnt be a 5 for this part of the tasting, but the whole is so good that I cannot think of anything that could make it any better.

MF&D - the feel is a bit too thin when compared to the dark lord of 09. the drinkability is not affected by thin, anyways. it is so delicious that it wouldnt matter if it drank like lava, the beer is too good to refuse one, even if it is the dead of summer.

this is an amazing beer with touches of burbon, licorice, chocolate, and coffee. the excellence cannot be denied, but there are improvements to be made.

Opened on 7/21/14 and poured into Westbrook Snifter. Not often am I moved to write a review but this was surprisingly delicious.

S: mostly molasses and caramel. smell was a let down compared to the taste...was totally expecting a dextrose bomb

T: a nice amount of coffee, chocolate and ending with a nice amount of roast. the bitterness of the finish really balances the brew out so it’s not overly sweet or cloying.

M: chewy and perfectly carbonated. this was one of the highlights of the brew as it’s perfectly carbed and chewy.

O: I really enjoyed this. Barrel Aged beers had recently been letting me down. Too much cloying sweetness and not enough roast and bitter finish. This was a wonderful reminder of how delicious BA stouts can be.

Color-this is the pinnacle of what Imperial Stouts should look like. The only downsize to this beer in my opinion is the lack of head that stays with the beer over time. I enjoy the continuos tickle of head thru the drink.

The smell that first comes thru your nose is amazing. The strong hits of Vanilla and Chocolate is what takes you first. When you dig deeper into the smell you can get the cherry bark and then the slightest of Licorice. All this adds to the begging experience.

With the first taste of the full tongue the head (if drank with it) fills the month and the flavor pop everywhere. The chocolate/vanilla hit every part to the initial swallow. The oak wood comes later thru the after taste and the overall flavor stays with you for a few minutes keeping the overall experience going.

2012 vintage bomber poured into Samuel Adams Utopias glass. Aged for 18 months.

A) Very dark, almost black. Glass is small, so 1 1/2 fingers of tan head forms and retains impressively, leaving thick lace and half-ring, half-cap.

S) I get malt, coffee, bourbon, sweet spices. It's really quite nice.

T) Very malty, lots of coffee, some spice, some alcohol.

M) Balance not as good as I expected, though certainly not bad (could very well be my storage). A little bit of alcohol burn, mildly carbonated.

O) It's definitely a solid achievement in brewing, but I'm a little less enthusiastic about it than some of the reviews I've seen. Maybe I should have let it go for longer. Unfortunately, I don't have another one.

Without question, a great D/I Stout to share with friends or drink on a long weekend day.
