2010 Reserve

Thank you to my BA friend from Oregon for sending this my way some time ago... Decided to make this normal day a special one by opening this beer:

A: Dark as the molasses it was brewed with. A very nice dark brown head which fades relatively quickly but leaves the lacing with a an oily film down the side of the glass.

S: Smells of a drunk in a candy store... sweet chocolate and booze with just a touch of licorice.

T/M: Initially smooth chocolate sweetness, followed shortly by a warm oily and effervescent mouthfeel with more chocolate finished off with a bitter dark chocolate/licorice aftertaste that lingers.

O: Overall an excellent beer. I was initially not as blown away as I thought I might be, but the beer gets better and better with every sip. It started good and finished great. I liked this beer so much I might just move to Oregon... or at least come out for a visit at the proper time of year (Decemberish).

2011 vintage. one of five or six bottles I secured last winter and the 1st i've actually opened.

fun fact : the first beer consumed in 2012 (~12:15am Noble Fir, 1/1/12)

appearance: served in an oversized snifter - ebony body, big chocolatey head but low retention

smell: bakers chocolate, roasted malt, molasses

taste: I'm a little mystified as to how the Abyss has held up at #13 on the best of BA list, despite the huge competition within the style. I like this beer a lot, but I don't think I view it with as much relative greatness as the aggregate appears to. A very robust stout - rich chocolate, molasses, dark roast coffee, a receding hop profile - green and earthy

mouthfeel: full-bodied and decadent

overall: a great stout, but i went a little overboard on the 2011 batch

2011

Appearance. Pours black! (as expected) 1/2 finger of tan-orange head.

Smell. Chocolate, bitter oak, red wine, dark roasted malts.

Taste. Liccorice, caramel, bitter wood, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla. Sweet, but not sugary.

Mouthfeel. Full body, but not in a taxing way. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall. Awesome big stout. Very easy drinking - a bit too easy!

2011 version

A - Pours very black, like an imperial stout should with a brown 2 finger head. Good retention/lacing.

S - Roasted malts, sweet licorice, dark chocolate and brown sugar.

T - Fair amount of oak with slight bourbon undertones, the bourbon isn't the main character here. The licorice isn't overwhelming, thankfully. Semi-sweet chocolate and roasted malts as well.

M - Thick body with medium carbonation. Just coats your mouth and has a wet finish.

O - Such a solid offering here! It covers all the bases and hits all the right notes for me.

22oz bottle (2011 Reserve, best after 8/4/2012) poured into a snifter. Pours an opaque, oily black w/ a rich thick mocha head that slowly settles to a dense pillow.

Aroma is rich roasted malt, bitter chocolate, warm bourbon, black cherries, and just a hint of red wine. A quick swirl brings that rich oily head back up again, along with a delicious earthy flash of nuttiness on the nose.

Taste is smooth and complex. Dry cocoa, molasses, licorice, rich caramel, bitter roasted malt, vanilla, dark fruit, booze, oak, and a nice smoky char blend together wonderfully.

Mouthfeel is thick, viscous, velvety.

Overall a rich, complex imperial stout that uses barrel aging expertly.

22 oz bottle, 2011, poured into a tulip

A- Black with a three finger mocha head.

S- Oak, roasted malts, dark chocolate, licorice, molasses, some vanilla.

T- Roasted malts, coffee, licorice, chocolate, oak, some bourbon and wine, some piney hops, well balanced.

M- Smooth, full body, silky.

O- This is a great beer and easy drink. I have a bottle of 2009, hopefully it is not infected.
