Beer poured from bottle into a Snifter style glass - 2011 Reserve

A - Beer pours with a gorgeous thick and meaty, deep coffee/espresso brown colored head; rocky, thick and juicy one and half finger sized foam; held extremely well and coated the glass with a healthy and "clingy" layer of lacing; body has a dark brown, "lights-out" colored body

S - Cherry and currants; thick and rich molasses aromas; dark toasted malt nose; touch of sugary sweetness and vanilla; strong bourbon nose coats the entire glass; oak; smells more of licorice than taste

T - Very strong chocolate and oak taste; dark coffee, almost raw Mediterranean-ish ground beans (think Turkish or Greek coffee); immediately turns into a semi-sweet taste of molasses, cherries and vanilla; deep dark chocolate taste; dark roasted cocoa beans; slightly chalky taste; nice bourbon coating; bitter finish with a light touch of licorice

M - Creamy and meaty; beer is definitely full-bodied, causing your mouth to make a slight chewing motion; deep bitter coffee/chocolate aftertaste; lingering raw coffee bean flavor; syrupy consistency

D - What can I say? Love at first sight, taste and feel; fantastic beer; one of my all-time favorites in my young beer drinking career; dessert in a glass; you can smell and taste each ingredient, unique, and well thought out; doesn't get much better than this

A- pitch black with dark tan head. head is present, plenty of carbonation for this style of beer
S. very sweet. Molasses, vanilla, and chocolate come through the most upon intial smell.
T- Similar to smell the beer starts out with a very sweet mouth. Initally i get vanilla and molasse. That fades to more roasty flavors of chocalate and some burnt wood. At the end is when you begin to taste the barel aged flavors and the fades to a slight hoppy finish. The barel aged flavors are very finite and blend to a point where they are hard to point out. If anything the oaky wood is the most present.
M- Thick as it should be. Not overbearing, but allows the beer to linger in your mouth after swallowing enough to get all flavors. Leaves good lacing on the glass.
O- Defanitly great. This years abyss does not disappoint. Has all the characteristics of a great beer.

Thanks notyourdadsbeer.com for the bottle!

Pours like motor oil. Pitch black with barely any head to speak of.

Smell is rather sweet. uh oh. Roasty malts are there somewhere and covered up by sweet cherries and sugar.

Taste is beautiful. Its roasty and smokey, very smokey at first. The malt is thick and sweet (exactly like an RIS should be). After the initial roasted malts subside, the subtle flavors come through nicely. In no particular order, I get vanilla, cherries, oak, bourbon, and licorice. Whats nice is all the flavors are still there after about 10 seconds. Probably the best beer in terms of mouthfeel I have ever had. The oak barrels are almost an after thought, but add a nice finish on what would be a very sweet, almost dubbel like beer.

Well done Deschutes and Thank you Marc!

2009 bottle I found in the corner of a little beer store a year ago.

Poured into a glass goblet. Pitch black with a half finger of tan head.

Rich smell of molasses, roasted malt and burnt wood.

The taste is a ride in the following order: malt, milk, burnt malt, alcohol heat, whiskey burn at the end. Amazing. Each taste blends with the next in a wonderful experience.

A crisper texture with a little cream to it. Almost no carbonation.

One of the most enjoyable of the imperial/barreled style that I have had. Great smell and taste without being a burden to drink.
